What oil would the dealership service department use when the third gen was new?

each dealer is different. my work uses castrol for all their oils. unsure of the grade when new but we use 15-50 castrol stuff when we have a magna in for service.

Id imagine the Mitsubishi oil wouldn't have changed, probably a mineral oil that has the mitsi label on it.

I would like to hear from someone who actually knows something about this.....

I think he is referring to "Mitsubishi" service centres not any mech.

I think you'll find it'll vary dealer to dealer. probably depends on what deal they have with the suppliers. I saw a lot of valvoline synthetic blends up here, usually a trade name not seen on the retail bottles so it'd be bulk. trans was always Mits SPIII.

Which ever oil Company/Distributor cuts the best deal - so long as the product meets the the standard 10/30, 10/40 20/50 and all the ISO etc standards they will use whatever is the cheapest they can get - remember at the quantities they buy they will charge you top dollar and pay 1/4 or less of that price. When I was rich and stupid it took Mobile 1 bottles and asked them to use it for the service - very unimpressed.... I was informed as they didn't supply the oil the car had no warranty - and I had to sign a disclaimer!

yes i work for a Mitsubishi dealer.castrol supply the bottled genuine stuff(15-50 petrol, 15-40 diesel/DPF versions, SP-III ATF) along with subaru oils(0-20 & 5-30 synthetic, 10-30 mineral) and probably a few more makes. we have castrol oil pumped into holding tanks every couple of weeks i think.

Would they use mineral, blend or synthetic?

Just wondering how these cars were quoted for 15K oil change intervals without a specific oil in mind?

All the Euro manufactures have their own spec for oil. A lot of aftermarket oils have these listed on the back and it is a usefull guide as to how good the oil is. I would think that MB 229.3 would be the absolute minimum requirement for a 15k change. Penrite HPR10 meets this now that it is full synthetic. MB 229.5 would be better (HPR5).

Does anyone know what the specs of the Mitsubishi oil are and what was the service interval of original 3rd gens? I suspect they changed it from 10k to 15k to help lower the cost of ownership to fleet customers at the expense of the long term durabilty of the engines.
