View Full Version : Noisy / chattery wipers. Adjust tension?

A few months ago I replaced with Bosch wipers (not just rubber strips). Immediately you could see them chattering a bit, and after a few days they got quite noisy. I even got them to replace the rubber strips and same thing, immediate chatter and after a few days they go noisy. I've tried putting RainX on and if anything it makes them worse. It's like there's way too much tension pushing them against the windscreen. Is there any way to adjust it?

They are just bolted on, if you pop the bonnet you can see the bolts. I did mine as tight as possible and they have been flawless, but maybe reseat the arms and see if that improves? Otherwise is your windscreen damaged, could be pitting causing them to jump over grit or something?

Windscreen is pristine so no its not that. Will try redoing the bolts

I just replaced my OEM ones with Tridon complete heads and are perfect so far. Could simply be the type of material used for the blade. I've always gone for rubber.

Is there any wax on the glass?
The chattering is caused by grip/slip on the rubber. Nasty problem - when the glass is either extremely grotty or very close to pristine clean, the wiper blades can grip too much.If you look at the smear on the glass, you will probably see the areas where the chattering occurs. Try to clean it properly, especially in these areas. Once the chattering starts, it is self perpuating. Increasing tension in the wiper arms will probably make things worse unless you can break through that grotty film.

I want to decrease the tension, not increase it
There's no visible chatter marks on the windscreen, but you can see it happening if you watch the arms

Hi Millenium7, please post and let us know if/how you solve it.

The blades should have some play where they join the arms, so the rubber bit tips over slightly and it gets dragged smoothly over the glass. If the arm is bent or the joint between arm and blade too tight, the blade will be pushed across the screen (like a shovel picking up snow) and chatter away. Gets worse as the rubber ages and hardens.
I only ever replace the rubber strip to avoid this. Cheaper, too. lol

you want to decrease the FRICTION of rubber across glass,
not reduce the spring tension otherwise wind@100km/h will lift your blades off
clean the rubbers properly (soap sometimes then alcohol) then when they're dry,
coat them with powdered graphite - available from hardware store or locksmiths

What am I missing??. Did not know Magnas/Veradas have adjustment on the springs on the wipers. Can't see on my TJ where the adjustment is. Perhaps some upmarket Euro cars have and adjustment on the springs.

Which Bosch wipers did you buy.? I am assuming you bought them online cheap.? If so they arent real Bosch wipers. Bosch wipers are made up of two different rubber types. Soft for the flexing parts so there is no noise or chattering. Hard for the screen surface to catch all the water and remove in one wipe.
There is plenty of fakes on online and they may look the same but they wont have the dual layers of rubber which make Bosch the Superior blade on the market. In my opinion there is no better blade for the money. Aslo Rainex is the worst thing to use as it will rapidly reduce blade life.

I initially thought exactly the same as Ego, but wasn't game to suggest.
Provided there is no major and obvious damage to the wiper arms or glass... Buy some Bosch Aerotwins from a reputable online seller and be done with it. I've always fixed chattery wipers buy buying good quality and the problems instantly disappear. If it were a tension issue, surely both springs (left and right) wouldn't have gone at same time.
Wiperblades.co.uk - AR20U and AR22U for a third gen (Australian equivalent in BBA500 and BBA550). $46 delivered to your door.
Buy them online through the Australian Bosch website, you are looking at $65 delivered.
Search this site for more info. Aerotwins are unbeatable IMHO.

Agree with EGO & flyboy, I've been using genuine Aerotwins for years now and never had a problem with them.
One of the first mods I did on the Jag was to chuck the stock wiper blades & replace them with Aerotwins.

bought them from autobahn. After many miles they seem to have settled down, why? well i'm not 100% sure if this fixed it, but I did notice when washing the car that one of the metal prongs that run along the plastic strip of the blade, had popped out. This wouldn't have always been the case as this was the 2nd set of wipers they put on.
So I fit the metal strip back in place, then closed the gap on the arms with some pliers. Not chatting anymore

If you have metal strips on the blades then you do not have aerotwin units, you have simply purchased refills.
The Aerotwin replaces the complete arm, 1 clip and the arm is off the car.
Often chattering can be caused by angle with single blade replacements, if only chattering 1 direction you simply give the main arm a little tweak to increase the angle in that direction

I bought the entire arm, then after the chattering they replaced the wiper but not the whole arm. Both chattered
Post some pics of what they look like...it sounds like you have something different.

You don't have aerotwins. There's no metal clip you can bend with pliers on aerotwins. You bought new Bosch metal arms with rubber inserts.
The metal arms chatter because they aren't placing equal pressure on the rubber along the length of the window. Bending or reinserting one of the metal clips has balanced the pressure more along the length of the blade and stopped the chattering.

Metal arm means is Bosch ECO Range. Good replacement over a standard insert. If it is a Bosch wiper on the ECO range Bosch logo will be stamped on the blade rubber somewhere and also on the metal arm.
When you replace them next i would highly recommend the Bosch Quick clip Aerotwin. Far Superior blade and you will be very happy. Not the cheapest on the market but are the best. im doing 40k a year and get 2 years out of a set.
