Just picked it up today-03 TJ S2 Wagon,as a gardening car, absolutely mint, and drum tight. Previous cars were 98 TF Advance, then 00 TH Exec, the then wife then traded to a Honda. My rides for the last 5 years have been FG Falcon utes (3 of them) for work. I must say, what a revelation the 3rd gen shape is in refinement and quality, no clunks and shunts through the drive line, no random electrical crap to go wrong, silent at highway speeds, everything a Falcon is not.
What I did forget about the 3rd gens is they are LOW, you need to climb down into the seat, where most cars built of late, even small ones have a high hip point, meaning you climb onto the seat, rather than drop into it.
What I have gotten used to over the last few years is in car connectivity, no Bluetooth phone or Audio or steering wheel controls DUH, gotta get used to not having them :(

'Connectivity' should never be an arguement for or against cars. Thats what aftermarket head units are for!
And don't get me started on 'in-car GPS' ugh, give me aftermarket any day.
I had bluetooth, 4 speaker surround, GPS, handsfree all that jazz in a 20 year old Camry which came with an AM/FM radio

Some head units have an adapter you can purchase to fit to your wheel, no idea how well they work or feel as i've never used on but its something to consider

TJ's are fantastic, should provide years of faithful service if maintained correctly.
Just buy an aftermarket head unit.. you can get a CD player / USB / Bluetooth compatible unit for well under $200 these days. And a GPS unit with far superior maps for $100-$200 depending how you want to go. Steering buttons, small sacrifice.. I have 3 cars, two without those and I don't miss them when I drive them, and now when I do drive the car with those I find I rarely use them anyway.
Enjoy!

I bought it as a cheap gardening/maintenance car, its already done a trip to ikea, taken my daughter and I up the freeway to Hahndorf, and filled with my tools while doing an evening shift doing building maintenance in the rain. They all remained dry and secure as intended, which you cant guarantee in a tray top ute.

The 3.5 TJ wagons are great workhorses, I think they actually ride better with a bit of ballast. Also, Hahndorf is one of my favourite places on the planet and the road from there to Adelaide used to be a blast, before they put in the tunnels.

Do the TJ wagons have the rear side window seal leak issues? (I have this now on my TH).

If it's the left side leaking could it be from the ariel socket?

Mine's ok so far, I wasn't aware of this being a common issue with any of the third gens (not saying it isn't, I just hadn't heard about it before). I wouldn't have thought it would be hard to fix though, I've had one of mine replaced by O'Briens years ago (lawnmower + stone = bugger!) with no dramas or subsequent leaks.

Thanks never thought of that. Will look at that as well, unfortunately it's on both sides now only noticed it when checking the spare wheel (wet under the wheel and some bubbling on the (particle board) side support panels above it.

Not sure how common the issue is with the wagons. My reading here is that it is due to the sealant going hard and drying out (inflexible?) around the rear windows and then letting water in.

hmm, I did notice under the boot mat, the MDF board was swollen along each side window(but dry), I thought condensation was the cause. Ill check it out when it rains again.

Replaced the rear muffler today which had finally succumbed to rust, pretty easy to work on. The old one sounded like a maraca when shaken, it was so full of rust particles.
One feature I discovered is the fold down back seat locks into place in the DOWN position so it doesn't spring up under pressure from the seat cushions, how clever!
