How common is head cracking? I have had 5-6 TN-TPs and never come across a cracked one, have I just been lucky?

It's a big lump of alloy, and if you thrash the car from cold you may crack the head. Unlikely if you treat the car with some mechanical sympathy though. If you lost coolant out of the system, it may crack due to localised heating. More commonly the early heads corrode quickly with no or wrong coolant, or soften due to overheating. Then the headbolts recede into the head, loose tension, and you get leaks across the head gasket. Lots of problems like that with the same design engine in the Sigmas, less so with the first gen Magnas.

First gen wagons are getting rare here in Au as well, second gen wagons, I see a few of those around. Most of them look like they are on their last legs unfortunately.
