hey guys!
im new to the forum and kinda new to the magna scene
my grandmother just failed her driving test and decided to give me her 1990 tp elante for free :D
it has done 230xxx kms but has been very well looked after and she owned it since new
only problem is it needs new cv's and a scratch down one side
its a 5 speed manual and doesnt bliw and smoke whatsoever or use and oil (surprising)
I love the car, great to drive and plenty of power!
high flow rear muffler getting put on tomorrow and new cvs when my vl commodore sells
I live in adelaide and its the only tp elante ive seen so far in the city! :D

Welcome to the forum
It may just be a name and body kits to make it into a an Elante
to me you have a unique car model of the first gen
think you will find a bit of information in this forum to help you if you need it
Member Carcycle (from SA) was a great car collector of GTs and Elantes

The idle speed controller (isc) may not be working.

want to know how to check the idle speed thingy ..yourself
a few screws to undo ... see if retracts at start up
have to get one from a wrecker ...

I might look into that - my TP Grand Tourer has the same problem.....
Back on topic, nice to see that there are still some Elantes around. It's a long time since I've seen one.
As for the CVs, I had mine renewed a few years ago and the mechanic fitted a reconditioned set but they were reversed as apparently the wear on one side is greater than the wear on the other. Perhaps one of our more mechanically minded members can comment further, but it was considerably cheaper than fitting a new set.

two years out of a reco cv joint isn't bad
to extend the life I used to clean- repack- and buy the boot kits from repco
CV rebuilds shafts .. used to be $100 a side fitted
now 140 or more new a pair or 75 reco a pair
CV joints cant be reversed on a first gen magna
different lengths of shafts and the middle idle shaft design ..
you could on the earlier live axle model 4x4 subaru and VW bettle
about reversing these CVs on a Ist gen
you have to strip both down
the outer cv unit has to be removed from both shafts .
to refit an outer worn cv back on to the opposite shaft... isn't worth the time or risk of failure

They were reversed on mine. It was done by Autotech Engineering at Granville. It was a while ago, November of 2004 to be precise, and everything still seems OK (at least there aren't any nasty noises). It was a business that normally dealt with more upmarket cars (particularly "sporty" Japanese ones). I took it there because, at the time, my wife was good friends with the sister of the owner of the business. I don't know if they're still in business or, if they are, if the business is still owned by the same people, as I haven't been there fore some years now. The invoice read "supply and fit left hand and right hand reco CV with new outer CV joints - 2 year warranty".

the two drive shafts are different length so they have to be reused on the same sides
Going by the invoice then
The inner bearings you can swap driver to passenger sides --- Its only a circlip ..(this is where you save money )
The shop replaced the outer CV units for new all with new boots ..hence the two year warranty
