ok all of a sudden my TJ sports decided it wanted to idle like a v8 with a lumpy cam, sounds good but i dont want it lol.
it only happens in idle once i accelerate its gone the car drives like normal.....
i have cleaned the throttle body cleaned the idle censor, i have pulled the plugs they look fine only 4000klm old, retensioned the heads new 4000klms ago, all hoses are on im getting frustrated.

suggestions?

If the heads were done, I wonder if there is a timing belt issue or worse maybe incorrectly tensioned and has jumped a tooth? Just a thought.

Aside from TW2005's suggestion (wouldn't that also be evident when running, not just at idle?), there are a bunch of things that can mess with idle. A few common culprits are dodgy ISC, incorrectly set or cactus TPS, stuffed engine temp sensor, leaky air hose between MAF and TB, leaky or blocked PCV system, blocked coolant flow through TB, leaking vac hose somewhere, worn distributor cap and/or rotor and coil issues. There's probably more but these are the ones that come to mind. Assuming there's no error codes from the ECU, I'd be eliminating each possible cause in turn, starting with the things that should only affect idle and are unlikely to affect driving.

yeah no codes and no wont be timing belt it would effect the whole operation not just idle will check rotor and cap tomorrow, it is just weird its only in the idle.

My TF is the same, please post when you find out what is causing your idle problem, maybe the same thing is wrong with my car.

It's not really that weird. The ECU effectively handles the engine differently when idling, regulating the engine speed with the ISC. There are a bunch of other factors the ECU needs to know to be able to idle properly, if any of these factors are unavailable or incorrect they will affect idle, but not necessarily normal operation. For example, if the engine's cold, a richer air/fuel mix will be needed to prevent stalling at idle, so if the engine temp sensor is playing up the mix might be wrong. Any air leaks after the MAF (which includes via the PCV system if it's leaking) could make the mixture leaner, though leaks after the TB will most likely have a greater effect on idle speed (eg. leaking vac hose, EGR valve gasket, plenum/manifold gasket etc.), and any small leaks will have less of an effect at wider throttle openings. If the throttle position sensor is set incorrectly or is faulty, or the throttle cable adjustment is set incorrectly, the TPS might never tell the ECU that you're idling, in which case the ISC won't be functioning to regulate idle speed. I'm not sure what effect a bad dizzy cap/rotor/coil would have on idle and whether bad running all round would also be expected in this case, but the cap and rotor are easily checked and eliminated anyway. The PDF manual has instructions on how to check the operation of most of these bits and pieces.

Oh, also, idle can be upset if the battery was disconnected or went flat at any point, particularly if your idle air screw was badly set. The ISC will adjust to allow for the bad setting but this will be lost if power to the ECU is lost for a few seconds. There's a procedure for resetting the ISC, check the manual or Google it (there's also a full procedure for correct setting of the idle air screw but I believe it requires the MUTII diagnostic tool to do properly).

Comp test?

No i haven't done a comp test Mal my comp tester is a short one not one with a hose.... i have no power loss while driving just when i stop and idle its rough and jerks a little like i said before a car with a lumpy cam.
just put a different ISC motor in and no difference made, i have read in other post people saying the auto could effect it some how? 5 speed auto can it effect anything?

hissing sounds? could indicate leaking air inlet manifold gasket, would commonly be most noticeable at idle as vacuum in the manifold is high, thus it sucks in more air at idle

YES! i can hear a hissy sound i cant track down.... can the plenum chamber gasket fail all of a sudden while installed?

also the heads were done 3 months ago it had been running perfect since and 3 days ago started with this crap.

changed upper inlet gasket no luck next will do lower inlet gasket.

Turns out it was a set of failed inlet gaskets from the vrs kit I got when I put the new heads on grrr
