Hi all, my name is Matt - if some of you guys have some time Id like a little advice :)

I have a 2004 Magna Wagon TL with some auto transmission problems.

From what I have read searching this forum it sounds like it could be the wave spring - I have no reverse and in drive after 10 minutes the neautral light flashes indicating overheating and the car barely moves forward. When cold it also takes a long time to engage into drive.

The car has done 170k and been serviced during this time.

Transmission fluid was flushed a few months ago (due to flare up between 2/3 and just overall feeling clunky) with genuine Mitsubishi fluid.

I am not prepared to spend large sums of money getting the transmission repaired .

So my question is - should I still have it diagnosed by a transmission specialist? Could the problem be something simple? I am of the opinion that at the minimum the box will need to be taken out to which will already be too much to spend on the car.

any advice would be much appreciated.

AFAIK the TL TW had the revised wave spring so it should not be this. If it was you would of seen it in a few pieces when it was flushed. Not all auto problems are wave spring related.
Sounds like the auto box might have had a hard life if it was only serviced when you started having problems. Who done the trans flush? Was enough fluid put back in?

thanks.

Transmission was flushed at 100k service at Mitsubishi dealer while still under 3rd party Warranty.

6 months ago (approx 155k) when it first started playing up I checked the fluid and it was cactus so I drained it and replaced (not a flush) twice. Fluid is clean pinky colour atm.

okay so a bit of good news it cant be wave spring but still not looking good I suppose.

I am wondering if judging by the symptoms could it be anything simple? or most likely major problem.....

Check the error codes. It may be that one of the input/output shaft sensors is giving trouble. They are located on top of the gearbox, with electrical connectors to them. Check that the plugs & sockets on them are clean and dry.

Checking error codes:

I have a TL wagon with the same km on it, so I'm watching with interest. lol (?)

[The solid wave spring in the autobox was a running change during the manufacture of the TL, so it is not save to say "all TL/TW have upgraded wave springs" unfortunately. AFAIK.]

Forget error codes etc, if the oil pump has let go then there is the issue

If the car was in limp mode then you would have 3rd and reverse.

From what is described in the OP sounds more planetary set related

Thanks again for the advice guys. Still deciding what to do.

Thinking of removing old transmission myself and installing a rebuilt or 2nd hand one.
