Hi guys,

I had an ATF cooler fitted to my KJ2.
I opted for a fairly large unit seeing as I also used a bypass thermostat valve so that if the fluid isn't hot enough it will not go through the external cooler.

Either way, this is how the mechanic could fit it, and the bulk of the cooler is hidden behind the solid part of the front bar.

Will this be ok or is it doing nothing considering what seems like minimal direct airflow through it?
Incidentally I went for a 300km drive on the highway and the cooler was warm to the touch, so the fluid must have gotten quite hot even cruising on the highway.

How far back from the bumper inner frame is it?
If there is a decent gap it'll be fine. it'll only need 2-3 inches...

If you think about it, the airflow will go past the lower part of the front of the bumper, then get 'sucked' up into the void behind the bumper due to it being a lower pressure zone.
Because air has mass and momentum, it will travel over the face of the cooler and through it, working just the way it is supposed to.

There is a fair amount of space between the bumper and the cooler. The cooler is fairly close to the AC condenser.

At speed I assume it should be fine, what about bumper to bumper traffic though?

Can't see it being a problem, the majority of the radiator is also behind the bumper but gets enough airflow. I'd have thought bumper to bumper traffic would move too slow for your tranny to get very hot anyway, and the passenger side thermofan should draw air through. Anyway, any amount of cooling is an improvement over the original specification.

anything over 20kph will get the air pulling up and around the bumper.
It'll work fine.

Edit:
You are in Canberra, bumper to bumper traffic only lasts 5 minutes ;)

I was in Canberra, now in Sydney which is why I rushed to get this fitted :)

It is the exact same cooler mind you.
Do you have pics with the front bar on?
As it seems yours will also be mostly behind the solid part of the bumper

You dont have to worry about air-flow IMO because theres plenty in that area, but more relevant is the fact that its an additional thermostatically controlled cooler to the standard cooler which is already adequate. Actually i look at it slightly differently and have concerns about it disrupting a big part of the radiator air-flow and also concerns about the oil flow with the additional capacity to be pumped, but thats just me.

If i think about my KH experience which i've now had for 14 years there has never been any problems with ATF overheating AFAIK cos never had any shift issues. Its at 260k's now and still running fine (touch wood). Its been all over the place too.

I think the cooler would be useful if towing or with the 5 speed in warmer conditions.

I'm much more concerned about the wave spring issue, which you have already fixed. I just dk if my KL has one or the flat type an no way to tell.

As some of the guys have already said, it will work. The fact that you have one fitted is going to do wonders to your transmission longevity. If it is warm, then it is working perfectly! I have one, best thing I have done to that car.
