Hi everyone.
my Mitsubishi 380 is an ex government car and as long as the ignition is on the headlights are on.
I have seen threads for other cars with this feature however I understand there a few possible ways this can be done. I was told by the dealer and 2 other places that it is wired into the loom from factory. I'd like to be able to control the lights as standard.. So worst case scenario I can redo the wiring myself, but I would like to know where the wire should route. If I get the stalk off the steering wheel which wire do I replace? Where do I connect fuse box? does it go through a relay? Or is there an easier way I don't know.. Thanks

At the risk of treating you like a noob....
have you actually turned the lights OFF on the stalk?
because ,a 380 ,with the headlights left on ,will turn them selves off when the ignition turns off and turn on again once you start it up again..providing you haven't twisted the switch on the stalk

The 380 runs a canbus system which is very touchy when it comes to cutting and re-routing wires. Anyway, the stalk has a plug on it that fits into a socket on the steering column and there are no wires to cut/reroute.
Do the headlights come on automatically on other 380s? Haven't taken much notice, to be honest.
If it is NOT a standard feature of the car, it may be programmable feature, or your headlight relay has fused or the stalk is defective.
Whatever . . . do some more research before you think further about cutting into the wiring loom.

Yes I have tried turning them off..
when I turn the car off, the lights remain on until I open the drivers door, or they time out.
the stalk does work - must be set to lights on to work foggies.
so does this sound like something programmed in?

No idea, don't own one myself.
Do you have an owner's handbook you can look at?
Ask a dealer, perhaps? Or wait for someone else to answer?

Do you own a multimeter? Id start with the headlight relay. It may have welded closed.

I cannot find anywhere which relay is which.. Anyone know? There are two in the fuse box under the hood with labels, neither are headlights... Inside the car there are heaps more but none labeled..

Have you checked the settings in the LCD display. If you have one its where you can set all sorts of things like lights on/ off/ delay etc.

Yes, unfortunately that is not one of the options.. :(

Is anyone able to tell me where the relay is for the headlights?

it may be part of the canbus system..there are relays etc of the right lower hand side of the dash...you need to open the door to remove the cover.
If I were doing it...... I would join pins 5, 7,9 o the column assembly switch with designation Connector 309-1
or earth them all.

I am not sure a relay exists - workshop manual doesn't show it but has detail about switching logic from computer syystems
Have you checked the fuse box near battery (where headlight fuses are) to make sure no-one has just done a simple jumper wire from an ignition on source to the low beam?

Nothing obvious, should the box be removed to check?
..might get on to it soon
If it was that simple I don't think the lights would stay on after the key is removed? - it turns off when I open the door

I tapped "lights on" and "IGN on" and power feeds out of there using "add a circuit" fuses to run an additional external relay to ensure my DRL's operate as per the ADR - ie go off when headlights are on
Aaron, lots of cars came this way for fleet use. It was an added safety feature, pretty much like DRLs except it uses the main headlights.
Also, with our 07 Outlander, headlight remains on until the door is opened so before fitting LED DRLs, we just left the switch to on.

Could this recall be the issue the original poster has?:

Hey thanks for the thought I had come across that but it seems to me to be too.. 'smart' I guess to be a fault - for example it does things like wait until I open the door to turn off or otherwise wait till time out.
Also if I were to take this to my local mitsu dealership are they going to replace it or are there other conditions like original owner etc. Thanks

This is what I found on the workshop manual on how the lights switch works:
Headlamp automatic-shutdown function even ¡f the lighting switch (tail lamps switch or headlamp switch) is ON, the headlamps (including the tail lamps) will automatically go off in the following conditions to prevent the battery
from discharging as a result of forgetting to turn off lamps.
- If the ignition key is turned from “ON” to “LOCK” (OFF) or “ACC” position with the lighting switch turned ON, and this state continues for three minutes, the headlamps will automatically be turned off.
- If the driver’s seat door is opened during these three minutes, the headlamps will go off one second later.
NOTE: The headlamp automatic-shutoff function can be customized on vehicles equipped with a multi-center display (middle grade type). Refer to P.548-486.
Dimmer automatic reset function
- If the headlamp switch is turned off while the high-beam headlamps are on, the dimmer switch will be reset. Because of this, the headlamps will illuminate at low beam the next time that they are turned on.
The dimmer switch will be also reset if the dimmer switch is turned on unintentionally while the passing switch is operated.

hey mate, you probably have an ex Telstra car?
On the Ford forums they had the same issue, here is the link and the fix for it.
Look for the brown wire apparently....:)

Got the car in today for the recall - everything solved. Surprised me & the dealership haha, but yes you were correct after the recall everything works as normal now :)
