View Full Version : Run on Relay - 1985 Magna TM

I have constantly running radiator fans (unless I pull the fuse). I've replaced the thermosensor (located at the radiator) and have had the main fan relay checked (located in the relay box). The only thing left in the circuit is the "Run on relay". This allows the fans to "run on" even if the engine is shut down. My manual clearly shows the run on relay in the wiring diagram and even describes its location ... but I can't find it. Using a test light at the relay box suggests that the run on relay has closed circuited ... its constantly "on". The manual states that it's adjacent to the battery but the only relay in that area (besides the relay box) is the intermittent wiper relay and some harness connections. Don't know where to look and even if I did I don't know what I'm looking for. Any help would be appreciated.

dam looks like it depends on which month the TM was made ?
Help Coldy - (I want a refund on my repair manual ) gregories TM page 72.... run on fan relay for leaded petrol engines only
says left hand kick well kick panel for the run on relay
air con and motor fan ..supposed to run on for ten minutes after engine is switched off ... no wonder the fan motors didnt last
I only have the cooling wiring diagrame from the TM haynes
it only shows the ignition - one relay-one fuse-the temp sender and earths

I bought a TM new in January 87 and wrote it off about 12 years ago but I still have the Gregory's service manual for TM. In the electrical section under "19.- RELAYS AND CONTROL UNITS - LOCATIONS", it says the engine cooling fan run on relay is located on the left hand innner cowl behind the left hand footwell kick panel OR adjacent to the battery in the engine compartment. Ditto for the engine cooling fan run-on timer.
If yours are not near the battery, they will be inside the car. Take the left side kick panel off the passenger footwell and you should see them behind there somewhere. You should be able to identify them by the number of wires and the wire colours. The timer has 5 wires and the relay has 4. You said you have the wiring diagram so I presume you know the colours. If not, just ask.
The text with the wiring diagram says they were for leaded petrol models. My TM was unleaded and its fans ran on for a while after the engine was switched off, so early unleaded models probably had them too (the build date of mine was Sept 86). The TN and TP don't and I don't think they achieve much. Ok, the engine cools down a little quicker after switch-off but so what? It needs to warm up again anyway after re-start.

Hi, magna buff. My Gregory's is like the one in your second picture.

I'm dumbfounded at the speed of your responses - fabulous!
I've given the Magna to one of my sisters so I can't physically check your advice until I next visit Canberra (I'm in Tumbarumba). I'm going to digest the information provided and will advise.
And yes .... I have a Gregory's manual.

Next step I suspect is tracking down a run on relay - wreckers?

first....... Time the fan operation ---- if it goes past ten minutes before shut off --- then you know for sure
Timer part .-I have never seen one . if unable to find a replacement .. wired in to the ignition accesories/on .. line will be better than nothing
On the relay itself -- will have some numbers -- and if lucky the maker ... ..there may be a superseded part now --
I have 4 and 3 pin first gen relays ..some are Denso others Brylite australian made

Its possible that the relay has its contacts stuck/welded together. I think the relay covers can be easiiy removed. just check the contacts are /arent stuck; if stuck, clean with a nail file or emery board.
Hope this helps.

So I finally got down to Canberra to work on my Sister's Magna. The run on relay and timer were exactly where Coldamus (and a rereading of the manual) said they would be - behind the passenger side footwell kick panel. I removed both relay and timer and didn't see any signs of fault or failure. We then spent 2 fruitless hours trying to track down the parts at the local wrecking yards - no joy. In frustration, I replaced both timer and relay in order to run some tests - everything is now working perfectly ... removing the units must have reset "something". Here's what I think happened:
Background:
(a) The main fusible link had been removed and a very bodgey job had been hardwired in placed (not noticed until after (c))
(b) The alternator had been playing up and would occasionally red-line.
(c) The alternator through a fit and blew a fuse or two, frying the bodgey main fusible link - from that day forward the fans would run continuously.
(d) I installed a proper main fusible link and replaced the Alternator
(e) I replaced the thermosensor and had the main fan relay checked - okay
(f) A test light indicated that the "Timer" for the "Run on relay" had closed circuited and was constantly on.
So - what to make of this. I think the alternator red lining may have frozen the run on relay timer into the on position. All that was required was to remove the relay and timer and reinstall.
Hope this helps other 85 Magna owners.
Let me also say that the speed with which you guys responded was startling. You pointed me exactly where I needed to go. I gave the car to my disabled sister who, until the above fix, was required to lift the hood and remove/replace the fan fuse during start up or shut down. I can't thank you enough.
Cheers

well Rumpfy was pretty close on this one
just have not found a replacement part for" the run on relay "
other than rewire fan to the ignition and watch the temp gauge fall

With these early models, the electronics was quite basic. Electronic parts can be had for all this stuff and it s easy (for me) to repair this stuff. I have circuit diagrams of the fuel pump controller and another mitsubishi module (cant remember must be alzhiemers) but I trace the circuits and just repair any module which is dodgy.
If there is any problem in getting spares, just ask for help.
Hope this helps
