View Full Version : Few Questions... Muffler/Exhaust and CD Player pins.

Hey guys,
Got a few questions, apologies in advance for my lack of knowledge.
1. I installed a new head unit in my KJ (a lot harder than I thought), put everything back together and realised my indicators weren't working, pulled it all apart again to find I had d/c'd the Hazard switch.
About a week later I realised I left for 4 CD's in the CD player whilst removing it, poor form on my behalf. I really don't want to pull apart the console again so I was wondering if by any chance anyone knows the pin configuration on the CD players power socket so I could just manually turn it on and remove the buggers.
2. With tax time rolling around I am thinking of doing something to my exhaust to make it sound a bit meaner (typical P plater) and was wondering what my options were, I have a budget of about $500 at most so nothing over the top.
3. Found an old post where someone mentioned a TJ vrx kit should fit on a rada, any idea on if this is true? looking at putting the front spoiler of a TJ vrx on mine.
My mates reckon CAT back is the way to go for a nice sound but it seems a lot more expensive then just a muffler, also what should I be looking for in terms of diameter etc?
Much appreciated.

After reading the circuit diagrams from the MMAL Workshop Manual and my Gregory's manual, Pins 21 and 22 on the B66 plug are what you're after. Pin 21 connects to the positive battery terminal (through a fuse of course) and Pin 22 is wired up to the ground side of the illumination rheostat on your dash (controlling the variable brightness of the stock radio).
Plug B66 is the larger 14-pin plug on your radio, where Pin 21 is the fourth pin from the right of the plug on the bottom, longer row (or in other words the right of the two centre pins) and Pin 22 is the pin to the right of that (see picture below to help explain this, as you don't have the wire colours to help you).

Please note that although I'm quietly confident in reading wiring diagrams — I've posted a DIY thread on how to test power third gen Manga/Verada digital clusters to get their odometer readings — please take care when using this information. I've only been through these diagrams a handful of times, but I am positive the above is right. In other words, I have not done this myself and cannot guarantee its accuracy until I've done so, use at your own risk, etc etc.
... doing something to my exhaust to make it sound a bit meaner (typical P plater) ...
Sorry, I can't help you with this one, although I am interested in this too (again, I'm a P plater). This question is probably best brought up with an exhaust shop though, as they will be able to help you in the right directions, particularly regarding the note you want, drone, that sort of thing.
... TJ vrx kit should fit on a rada, any idea on if this is true?
Yes, it is possible, but you'll need a TJ front bar and reo (I think? I'm not very knowledgeable in body works) as the front VR-X fits over this, but it won't fit over the Verada bar. For example, here is Life's car (ride thread (http://www.aussiemagna.com/forums/showthread.php?t=103260)). It started life from the factory as a KJ Xi Verada. Definitely not a sluggish luxury cruiser anymore...

Thanks Hyphen,
I will give your advice a go and let yo know how it goes!
I found a TJ vrx at a wreckers, I assume I can take both the bumper and the front spoiler on it given they are intact?

You're welcome
I'm sure you can grab the bar skin, which is a normal TJ bar, and VR-X kit off together. You'll be much better off this way anyway, as you'll have everything you'll need. VR-X bar skins have holes drilled into them for the VR-X kit, which obviously Executive/Advance/etc do not. Plus, again, you'll need that bar skin anyway. I'm also sure you'll need the reo bar (the metal bumper bar that supports the bar skin and keeps it shape, amongst other things — otherwise the bar would just be a piece of hanging molded plastic), because Verada bars stick out a lot more than the Magna bars.
Also, welcome to the club and these forums! You'll find there is a plethora of information available here, you just need to take a look around! Although I do suggest using Google to search the forums with the site:aussiemagna.com operator (eg: search 'wheels site:aussiemagna.com' in Google), as it works much better than the search function on here.
Assuming you still have the plug from the old stereo with some wires, you should just need to connect the red & yellow to 12V and black to -ve on a power source.
Personally I'd use a spare battery and include a fuse in the line !!!
Exhaust - assuming your KJ has a restrictive & quiet muffler, you could bolt on the VRX or Sports muffler from another AWD and get a bit of noise and a few kW as a bonus.
Or you can get a new muffler that is almost the same as factory sports - see my sig, I think it's a Lukey LR229 or something. I'll see how good/bad my memory is after I hit post :)
IMO, if the rest of your exhaust is in good nic, you don't need to replace any of the piping on the Magna/Verada, most of the pipe is already a healthy 2.4" diameter. The AWD does have a restriction in the headers, so HR extractors are considered a good upgrade.
Cheers!
edit. d'oh, bad memory, I don't have the model number for the muffler in my sig! It is around on the forum though, just do a search.

Excuse my ignorance but if I got the lukey muffler it would just bolt straight on right? Also it sounds really good, appears as though a fair few magnas are running it, cheers. Finally got the CD's out too :D
I can't appear to find the model you listed anywhere anymore but this one seems ok http://www.bestmufflers.com/bshop/product_info.php?cPath=124_295_846&products_id=4671
Regarding the VRX kit are you saying I need to get the bumper from a regular TJ, put it on then put the VRX kit on that?

There are two versions of the Lukey muffler: AL4-5597 (bolt-on for FWD only) and LR2779 (needs to be welded into the exhaust system).

Yes, the left and right pair of the TJ VR-X kit fit over the top of the standard TJ bar. This is from the Workshop Manual:
http://i1048.photobucket.com/albums/s367/TehHyphen/AMC/Workshop%20manual/VR-Xkitfrontandside_zpsaa1fc188.png
You can see that the front kit is in two parts (5. LH Air Dam and 6. RH Air Dam), and attaches to the standard bar with bunch of screws and clips. Further, I've just read in the manual that the standard bar must be taken off fully to get the VR-X kit on/off anyway, so you're even better off again!
Finally got the CD's out too
So my pinouts were right? I can pop that away in the memory bank for later then.

if putting the vrx kit on a verada the front reo and foglight brackets will need to be changed to work with the magna bar. the rear may also require a different reo.
also from memory the standard VRX muffler is a lukey?

Thanks for the confirmation, John. I forgot about the fog light brackets though
Max, if you grab basically everything from the front end of that VR-X, you'll have a good time!

Cheers. hopefully I can pick one up,
I will most likely grab the lukey and get someone to weld it for me, thanks for all the help!
