So after i thought i had the timing tensioner rattle, we took of timing covers let the engine go bone cold, and re start to listen to the rattle, and turns out it has nothing to do with the timing components but highly likely its the hydraulic lifters, we let it cool again and if we crank 1-2 secs then turn off (not start) then ..start the car it will not make that rattle sound, so we let it cool again, start it, it makes the rattle sound, so we let it cool down again and we pored oil through the filler before starting and wolloah the rattle was only very minimal. (this took 2 1/2 days to do, it didnt cost me anything just time, throughout the cooldowns, we made sure the motor was bone cold each attempt)

So my mechnic came to the conclusion that its the lifters and the oil is too thin (nulon 10w-40 185,000kms of HARD abuse put through the motor) he said try and step up the oil to a 50 or 60 grade oil,

My question is has anyone had the lifter problem and is anyone using a 50 or 60 weight engine oil and what are your comments on it??

thanks

Not sure. But, high voscosity oil on cold starts takes a little longer to get to the top. Mihght make things worse.

I recently replaces my lifters AND rocker arms. I did the rocker arms and shafts because my arms had worn enough to not quite fit the lifters (in simple terms). Worth a look if you're sure the noise is lifter rattle.

Easy job I thought (changing lifters), and with new lifters I don't have any lifter rattle. YAY.

Previous to this I tried 5w40, 15/40 and 15/60 - didn't stop my rattle. Currently running 15w40.

But after all of that it turns out I have the same problem as user travellingpom - linky link here (http://www.aussiemagna.com/forums/showthread.php?t=97103)

Not suggesting this is your issue. Lifter rattle I've learnt from my adventure changing lifters is different to the sound you will hear in the video link in travellingpom's post.

What do people think about castrol GTX 15w-50 mineral engine oil?

I have always used synthetic oils all my life, this is the only car that has lasted me over 150K, I see the pricing for synthetic versions of 15w-50 and i cant justify spending $70-$80 per 5 litres of oil, vs $35-$40 for mineral oils

Will there be a negative effect transfering over to mineral oils? will i start to get leaks? and will it stuff up my motor?

$70 for synthetic oil?! I pay $40 to $50 for penrite. Shop around chief.

As for synthetic vs mineral, do a little research as you'll get arguments for both. Bob the oil guy is a good start, YouTube after that if you're that way inclined.

I use synthetic oils because there are advantages regarding deposits and effectiveness over a broader range of conditions. Plus, you can (apparently) go a little longer between changes when using synthetic oil.

Personal preference I reckon.

I used GTX and other brand 20W-50 mineral oils in my 2.0 and 2.6L Sigma & early Magna engines without any problems.

No negative effects swapping to a mineral oil. I used to change at 12 months or 10,000 km, whichever was earliest. Doing the same on my TJ and TL, but go for 15W-40 mineral oils.

I used synthetic Mobil 1 at one time, but I did the annual oil change anyway. No real advantage there, so I went back to mineral. Now if I was running a Taxi 50,000 km a year on the one oil change, I'd use a synthetic.
