View Full Version : Brake shudder
Hi all.
Over the weekend I replaced the discs and pads on my TL Wagon due to brake shudder, as I presumed they were warped.
I replaced them a while ago, and the problem, (ie shudder), went away, but this time, it is still there.
Car drives great at both slow and fast speeds, so no reason to believe it's a wheel and/or tyre issue, and even if driving at very slow speed, such as 15km/h with slight brake pedal, it feels as if the discs are still warped.
Any other ideas?? This has me stumped.
Thanks Guys.. :)

Did you only replace the front? The rears could be the problem.
Did you bed in the new pads correctly?
Did you inspect the condition of the calipers and lubricate the guide pins when you reassembled?
Otherwise, it could be a worn wheel bearing or perhaps other worn suspension components like ball joints.
Whats the correct way of Bedding in the new pads??
Calipers and guide pins are fine... I'll check ball joints and wheel bearings, however its definitly a warped rotor feeling... (Rotational shudder upon brake application at any speed).
I had no issues the last time I replaced Discs and pads.

Any chance there's a lump of rust or some other crud on the face of the hub that could be offsetting the disc? When I replaced mine I cleaned up the hub and studs with a wire wheel, on the advice of a mechanic mate, as according to him even a little bit of rust can have a fairly big effect on the set of the disc and can cause it to warp again.

Does it shudder/shimmy whilst driving along not under brakes?,if not, it has to be the rotors still you would think

Still haven't said if you did the rears or not.
Whilst driving, and no brake pedal is applied, the car is smooth.
And, I haven't touched the rear brakes, but the fact it happens even at crawling speed, makes me believe it is coming from the front.

I thought I had warped discs once. Turned out to be due to engine idle being rough. A bottle of injector cleaner solved it.

It could be flats on the tyre tread caused by the previous warped discs. After a while, they tend to want to keep braking on the same spot.

Why don't you get a dial gauge and place it on the disc while you rotate it - if there disc is warped it will be easy to see. Mark the 'high' point on the disc and then rotate it 2 lug holes and test again. If the high point has moved the problem could be the hub - if atthe same spot then the disc must be warped.

Had a similar issue on an AU falc many years ago, turned out to be a stuffed ABS module sending pulsating brake fluid to the calipers.
Just a thought, might not be your problem.
Get the rear discs machined. Had the same thing on mine, did the fronts but at low speed and just about coming to a stop it would pulse. Did that 4 years ago and it's been sweet ever since. Only cost $40, that's with me pullling the discs off myself.

Get your suspension & bushes checked too, although you are braking the wheels - the wheels have to stop the car. If there is some play in the connection with the car you will get "Shudder".
