Howdy all, I haven't been on the forum for a long time, but today I am in need of some help. Car is in for a service and the mechanic has just sent me a pic of some bits that came out with the oil from my transmission, along with metal shavings.

Any idea what the pieces are and what to do next? AWD with 200,000k's on it.

Wave spring. Pretty much you need a new gearbox or have yours rebuilt. I'm not to knowledgeable on the matter though, do a search and you'll find info on it

Well so much for TL not having wave spring issue.... There was a thread about having wave spring replaced before it does any damage. http://www.aussiemagna.com/forums/showthread.php?t=103812

So its cheaper to act now before the pieces find the way into the pump and damage it.

Cheers gents, once I got over the wave of panic I remembered about the wave spring and couldn't recall if it was in the TL or not so just waiting to hear back from the auto guru and see what he can do.

You have a rare and expensive transmission.
Before it does damage you can get it replaced (as per the link above).

I was the person who had mine replaced before it did any damage, keeping in mind the transmission did not have to be taken off the car, but I was told if the wave spring was found broken (which it was) and they could not put it together like a puzzle the transmission would need to come out.

Isn't it the TW When the issue was fixed?? I have a TL and had the Wave spring fail as well...

Its supposed to have been fixed during the TL production run. @milo vrex and Spetz whats the build date on your compliance plates?

KWAWD, my car is a KJ2. I did a preventative wave spring replacement and actually at the time I took the car in I thought that the wave spring was still in one piece.
Being a KJ2 I had the weak wave spring from factory

will let you know the build date when I get it back next week. Box is coming out for a look, the guy reckons he has an upgraded replacement part. I think he called it a diaphragm seal.

He probably just means the stronger wave spring, which from what I understand is not an "upgrade" as much as a "downgrade" seeing as it is for the older 2nd gen transmissions.

New spring, replace planetary, and a clutch plate for reverse.
The planetary is showing some wear inside, and there was enough metal floating around that the oil pump could have locked up any time for a total failure.
The new spring is apparently a really beefy unit, the Automatic repairers industry body have come up with this particular solution so it is a secret item. Interpret that how you like.
He reckons Mitsu didn't upgrade the wave spring till 2008, similar or same box is in the Terracans and some Kia's also. So not sure if they have failures, or alternatively is this where the updated part comes from. Secret Ju Ju black magic stuff. Anyway I don't care as long as it is fixed and stays that way. $1350, 2 1/2 days turnaround. I should add my fuel bill to that as I have been driving the boss's Maloo for a couple of days.

Secret spring, that makes me laugh and not updating until 2008, well mits must have sent back from the future the transmissions for the 380's and most TW Magnas to be fitted earlier as these have the updated spring.

Good you are getting it fixed, sad your "guru" is full of it, hopefully his skill with the transmission will be better than his skill with his right hand....

Yeah, it was pretty funny, " only auto trans specialists can get this part", but anyway it is back now and shifts nice. He showed me the planetary which was obviously worn and most of what he said made sense.
Some guys just have to talk everything up I guess; I am just satisfied with getting a job done on time and on budget these days.

, similar or same box is in the Terracans and some Kia's also. .
Is this correct? The same transmission was installed in some Pajeros? And which Kia'?

Hyundai Terracans - maybe v6 Sonatas? Not sure, but I knew the earlier v6 Hyundais had a 6g variant so it makes sense I spose they would have the gearbox too.

Are they compatible with the 3rd gen?
