Hi, using 10/30 Mineral oil in the 380 and it dissapears after a couple months, have to top up. I had a gemini years ago with a similar problem and the only oil that stayed there was Mobil 15/40 I think it was. Also have rattly lifters in the cold weather but goes when car warms up. Done 215k and goes well. Should I try 15/40 oils?? Ive not seen mobil for years.
Cheers

Yep, sounds about right

I have a 380 with 185k on the clock and used HARD and my lifters are noisy.... the type of oil will make no difference, i find if i prime the car (crank but turn off straight away, then crank and turn off straight away, then crank and start the lifter noise does not happen at all)

as to comsuming oil, i driver 500kms a week on average and i have to top up about 250-400mls of oil each week to keep the oil full, its normal, these cars do burn a bit of oil after kms get clocked up on them...

check your oil once a week and top up as needed i would never let the oil get the to Low part of the dip stick,

i also find if i use oil flush and put fresh oil in, my oil gets chewed up for the first 1000kms or so, i have to top up about 1.5litres in the first week, but if i dont use oil flush it does not chew oil

hope this helps

I'd check,
1) the exhaust fume if it is white/blueish and stinky which means it's burning oil.
2) remove spark plugs and see if there is oil in the tube, if so you need a new rover cover and tubes gaskets kit (i had mine changed last weekend)
3) check for any oil leaks at the bottom round the oil sump.

I drive mine every day for 66Km and I have 150k on the clock and i never added oil, it does get a little less when its almost due to service but that's normal. So if the car is taken care and services every (at least) 5 to 10K km, it shouldn't burn that much oil (always if drive normally and not on tracks to the limits)

My 380 has done 99000km and uses 1.2 litre of oil every 7000km i run 10/40 valvaline armour. My mechanic said may be valve stem seals he said not enough to worry about. Still seems a lot to me compared to daughters old hyundai as doesnt change.

My 6G74 also uses oil, at 1L/2,000km.
It is a fair amount if you consider 10,000km oil change intervals would mean 1 whole 5L jug of oil is being used.

From my "investigation" it seems that the oil is being lost via the valve stem seals.
I bought valve stem seals and I am planning on swapping them (heads left on) and hopefully this rectifies the problem.
In real terms using $50 worth of oil over 10,000km is not worth the trouble
