View Full Version : EPA Notice?!

Ive just got a notice saying that my vehicle was considered to be either excessively noisy or to have a faulty exhaust system???
And i need to have it tested or else.....

How does a 4cyl engine with a simple cannon exhaust breach EPA standards?.... I swear these cops really love to get revenue from every corner here in Vic.

I know its louder than it should be, but compared to the V8's or even V'6s that these punks around here drive around with their straight pipe exhaust line, mines just a little cat purring along!

Anyway.. Just wondering if anyone else with a 4cyl and a performance/cannon exhause has ever had any problems. And if i am going to be breaching the EPA limit? I dont think it will, its not that loud.. But i'll have to see.. :doubt:

Anyone know how much it costs to get this test done? Hopefully not alot.. Ill keep posted on whether the car is legal or not..

they might be suspecting your car is catless or something, not many people expecting a loud exhaust from a magna i guess

i suggest you have a CO test at local mechanic before taking it to EPA, there's a $10,000 fine waiting if your car emits polutant beyond the treshold.

"Loud" is subjective, isn't the limit in vic 92dB at a certain rev range? FWIW Cannons are probably the loudest type of muffler there is, as they are only really a big oversized resonator that doesn't silence much at all.

Where are you located in melbourne?

On the back of the EPA notice they have listed 15 or so places that do the EPA (dB) and emmision tests.

I always go to DAALDER exhaust in Plenty rd Preston and the charge for the test is $27.50. If you go over the 92dB ( i think or 94dB) reading you will have to get it quitened down with a resinator (hot dog) and then another retest needs to be done.

It is all explained on the photocopy paper you have received with the EPA notice.

Once you have the CERTIFICATE OF COMPLIANCE you can send ithe white copy to them by mail or fax and thats it.

Unless you were sent a letter otherwise stating to go directly to the EPA, in that case go to an EPA approved noise tester (which i can tell you is near you) and get them to do the test before you go to the EPA just to make sure you are legal.

Let me know how you go.

Good Luck.
John

Yeah i think it is 92dB at 2000-3000rpm.

Yea, i was gonna go to Daalder exhaust.. Anyone know at what revs they do the testing? I heard someone say 3000rpm?

If thats so i should be more than fine cause the cars loudest at 2500rpm (thats when the pressure hits and emits a loud low freq rumble from exhaust line) and quiets down after that at 3000 and higher and all you can hear is the engine, hardly exhaust noise.

grrr... 27.50... If i do comply can i get the cops to reimburse me?

Is your car an auto? cos autos drone more than a manual under load anyway.

But when the testing is done you are not loading up the revs and it is basically free revving.

And NO The cops wont reimburse you $27.50  hehe.

I think it is at 3000rpm unsure but.

yea ur right, if its just free reving theres next to no noise at all.. Its only under load like you said.
It is an Auto.. didnt know they 'droned' more.. that must be the 'low freq sound' i was talking about.

you sure know ur sh*t man, thanks for the help. Really makes me feel a bit better. Good to know we got all you guys that have valid info to contribute to this forum.. Then theres people like me who dont know alot about some things and just feed of all your knowledge, slowly absorbing and learning from the experienced :D

I recon i should be right, just damn po' lice tryna make a difference..

That's just unlucky dude. I never had any problems with it, and it had straight pipe from the CAT on, no Sausage even.

I wish you luck

The ruling used to be 4m at a 45 deg angle at 3/4 max rpm. Remember at 96db the reading climbs a lot more for what seems a little more noise, (bit hard to explain here lol)

Some places like Jaycar actually sell db meters, you can atleast test yourself if you are curious.

As previously said, a cannon is not really a muffler, it is just an excuse for a tail pipe. I know thehkway's car is way too loud.

As for other V8 and V6 cars you hear, unfortunatly it was you they must have heard or atleast thought they heard. I would be surprised if you are over as I have heard your car and it is not that loud.

Thanks for that Mal.. They did the test today.. it was like 1metre  at 45 degree angle.. And the limit was only 90dB????

The car was at 92! So he said only way he can give it to me is if i put a baffler, which he did, and welded it on. 70 for the silencer and 27.50 for the noise test. I didnt know if the silencer was expensive, can anyone tell me?? I just wanted to pass and go home...

Anyway, now i have this silly looking thing jammed in my cannon.. he painted it black for me. The car lacks its low frequency noises which i loved, but was getting sick of. It has a nice tone now, so im mildly happy..

Now the car is sitting on 89dB.. Im somewhat happy cause i really was getting sick of the cannon noise, and the attentiion it drew. My Wank factor has dropped from 7/10 to 4/10 now lol

Anyway thanks to everyone who gave their knowledge on this subject.

Oh and if anyone needs to do this they test the car at 3560rpm..

At this point because of my valve seals the smoke was pouring out.. I just stood there lookin at it like this

My car is loud... well... louder than TR/TS with just a muffler anyway...
My car will be getting the pretty treatment done on monday :D
