Mitsubishi Australia has recalled more than 110,000 vehicles over a defect with the circuit board in the cars’ turn signals and lighting switches.
The recall affects 114,862 Mitsubishi models including approximately 91,000 Colt, Lancer, Evo, Grandis and 380 passenger cars and roughly 23,000 Outlander and Pajero SUVs produced between 2004 and 2008.
Affected by the recall is the DB-series 380 built between 2005 and 2008, 2004-2008 RG Colt, 2004-2008 BA Grandis, 2005-2007 Lancer and Evo, 2005-2007 Outlander, and 2005-2006 Pajero.

Looks like that's every 380 ever built.
Good luck finding the current owners of those which have changed hands two or more times via private sales.
Never heard of any of the described problems or symptoms that could have been caused by this so-called defect, and if any group was going to discover and report such a problem it would be this forum.
So very likely a non-event for 380s.

I sell about 10 of these a week at the moment, interesting though as I have this week had a heap of dealerships calling me wanting to place bulk orders for these as my price retail is less than they can get them from MMAL

Well then you need to learn some patience!, 30 mins to make sure your car is safe is more than worthwhile...

The dealer will probably put on more faults than they fix, that's what usually happens.

Is this the idicator/light stalk switch?
I had mine replaced 2 years ago
Madmagna
14-08-2014, 08:00 AM
Yes, the dealer will test the switch and cause both your oxy sensors on the front bank to fall off, your dash cluster to turn Pink and your wheels to turn square
John, if you have nothing decent to contribute how about you just bugger off and not bother posting.
For those who do decide to get these checked, it is worth it as having no head lights in the middle of the night can be somewhat inconvenient unless the glow from your "brand new" not new forged 90km old engine can light the way for you :) What is the worst that can happen, they find yours is faulty, they give you a nice new clean stalk under this recall and you are on your way with your free coffee you had while you waited......

Yes that is correct, we sell heaps of these ourselves as do a few others as well. Have been a big issue in many of the range, mostly is an issue with headlights however have heard of a few of more recent times with issues with also the indicators.
The ones sold these days are apparently (well according to Mitsubishi) an updated unit, not sure what they did to fix the issue however having said that have not had one come back to date

How come they do a recall on this but ignore the wave spring issue in Magna/Verada?
Madmagna

Not at all, you turn the steering wheel one way to give access to one screw on the cover, turn other way to get access on other screw, couple underneath and cover unclips. Stalk has 2 tabs, push them in and it just slides out.
There is no wiring to worry about
chrisv

The issue I had with mine was indicators working intermittantly as well as lights flickering
The new unit has a much better feel than the original. Seems a much softer smoother action

Thanks Mal. I've just ordered one from your eBay page.
The way the recall reads is that they'll only replace the indicator stalk if there's visibly something wrong with it. I'd rather just pay $115 and spend 30 minutes of my time replacing it so I know there won't be any issues in future...

Because this issue is a safety issue, BIG liabilities for the company if people die and they did nothing about it
Wavespring is just a reliability issue, some wavesprings/trans will die, some wont......not a big issue in thier eyes

Cant help wondering what happens if the wave-spring fails at 100Kmh, but apart from that reliability is important too. I'd hate to be 100's k's from anywhere when this happens or on a very important trip.

If the wave spring went at anytime, most of the time you would not even know about it, I am still not sure why this is such a bid deal to you. Can not only happen on the transmission used by Mitsubishi either
The spring will only cause damage if bits get past the filter and then end up in the pump, if this happens at 100 you will generally lose drive, roll to the side of the road, swear and curse a little, call a tow truck and then get ready to get your credit card out. If this happens when you are pulling out into an intersection then you will go no where, same if you had a fuse for the ECU blow and the car stalled.

At lot of the stalks would have failed by now and been replaced under warranty or owners cost. The two 380s in our family had the stalk fail at about the 6 year mark. Not too much to complain about as fairly cheap and dead easy to change. A dealer would do it in 10 mins or so. The fan resister though-that's another story......

Whats with the fan resistor??
Madmagna
15-08-2014, 03:19 PM
Having called a service department today I have found out the process
You dont actually get a new stalk, they will take out your old stalk, check the manufacture of the board, if made by 1 of 2 different companies the board gets replaced and your old stalk put back in. IF there is reason that the old board can not be removed without damage then perhaps yo will get a new stalk but unlikely.
So in effect they are doing what they need to do and replace the faulty part and not the complete stalk

Current resister that controls the speed of the blower motor. Very hard to replace as stuck up under passenger side dash. I used this as an example of how well designed the stalk is in terms of getting out. The fan resister is one of the handful of things that tends to fail on the 380, like the window regulators. I had the fan resister, 2 window regulators and the stalk all go in a few months! At least the stalk and window regs are easy to change over.
Mal can replace the resister with his triple jointed hands or maybe just because of his experience ;)

Yes I have had 2 regulators and stalk fail.
The stalk was replaced under warranty but I paid for the regs

Why wouldn't you just get this done at a Mitsubishi dealer for free?
Anyway, I called Eastside Mitsubishi on Friday and they did mine today, took less than 2 hours after dropping off my car.

I think he was being sarcastic due to the irony of him just buying one when he would have gotten one for free.

In the time I've had my 380 the headlights act as if the switch is always set to headlights on. I was told this is a 'feature'. I am aware that this has been done to cars genuinely but am now wondering if in my case this could be to do with the stalk? Can this be caused by this malfunction? Also good timing because just tonight my headlights started flickering after a random CEL which won't go away..
After putting force on the stalk and feeling it move slightly the headlights stopped flickering but the CEL remains.
Would this actually cause a CEL?

Nope, this is the first one I've seen.
s311_bvm

Nope, this is the first one I've seen.
There has been two other recalls:
The first in 2005, it was for only a small number of cars. The connector locking tab on the fuel hose that connects to the fuel inlet pipe on the engine may not be fully based and, as a result, the hose may become dislodged. In the worst case this could result in fuel leakage and loss of fuel pressue causing the engine to stop.
The 380s involved in this recall were built between July 4 and October 19, 2005.
The second 380 recall is for the left hand rear fuel tank retaining strap bracket
Date of recall creation 24th September 2008
The affected vehicles were manufactured between 27 July 2006 and 19 February 2007.
There is the potential in the event a vehicle with a full tank of fuel is involved in a severe collision, that the LHR fuel tank retaining strap bracket may fail allowing the fuel tank to dislodge resulting in the possibility of a fuel spill.
Mitsubishi contacted the owners of all vehicles involved to have them fixed.

Thanks, didn't know about those... but I vaguely remember the second recall. My 380 is Jan '06 so being between those 2 I wasn't effected. Still deciding on this new one, as stalk is fine and planning to trade/sell it off before end of year.

I actually received a letter from Mitsubishi about this recall and have arranged for a check next Monday.
I am the third owner of this car that is seven years old now so not bad service I'd say.
An 30 minutes is not a long time to get something fixed for free when Mitsubishi could have probably just ignored it.

Took both 380's in today for this check. Both cars had the faulty part fitted, so both received new circuit boards. Also getting a new steering column cover as they broke one of the locating tabs off re fitting. Kicked up a bit of a stink when I saw the snapped piece on the floor mat. Service manager said it was from the old part removed. Told him that's rubbish and made them pull it apart again and showed him where it belonged. He asked what I wanted to do I said well that's up to you but it wast broken before you had your guys touch it!
He went to look in the used car yard to see if they had a 380 in there to swap it over. Came back and said I'll have to order you a new one and apologised.
As I went to leave to go get the other car I said please try not to break this one as well!!
Pics for fun

Goes to show service managers can be full of BS at times.
Wife's 2004 Lancer didn't get the recall letter, son's Lancer, a few months younger, got an invite. Go figure. (Yep, his indicator stalk has been acting up for a while. lol Quite a while. But he was too stingy to fix it. Now he is getting a free fix. lol lol )
I paid to have mine fixed earlier this year at an authorised service centre. Am I entitled to a refund if I call them up?
