Mum snapped about 3 sections of the mast off of her 99 TH Solara a couple years ago, and been getting along fine with a good old coat-hanger, but the time has come to replace it. I'm getting sick of staticy AM reception even when close to the originating station.

Is the Aerpro AP253 "replacement mast" the right part? Seems to have a rope for an automatic antenna, and her's has been manual since she bought it in about '08. Seems like most of the threads here are about replacing the whole unit, but the rest of the antenna works, just need a new mast.

Do I just have to undo the nut on top of the black rubber grommety thing on top of the guard, or do i have to take the wheel etc out first? I'm not superly mechanically minded, but am willing to learn.

Thanks guys

Nchy...you beat me to the punch! LOL! A mate of mine has a TJ sedan and some prick "restyled" his antenna in the carpark at Chadstone SC on Sunday. He wants to know if he can just put in another manual mast BUT he would like to have one of those rubber ones that can't be bent out of shape. Can anyone advise if this is possible? The unit can be seen here:

Note that with the original aeriel, there is a plastic drain under the base to allow water to drain away under the car instead of into the boot. Make sure that if you replace the aerial mast, the base is able to be fitted with a drain, or when you wash the car....

Aerpro make a direct replacement for the manual aerial, but the mast one is for the electric one. Replaced one when I first bought my TJ. I've kept it at about 30 cm extension since putting it in, and no damage so far, 3.5 years later.

When I bought my TL wagon, the aerial was snapped off, but I found an aerial for a transistor radio that I jammed into the hole. Looks original. Works well.
