Sounds like the power steering fluid level might be too low. In that situation, the steering can be very heavy at standstill - rather like if you have the engine turned off. Turning the engine off and restarting may have allowed some trapped air to get out of the system.

What abt power steering pump belt? Is it still good, and in good tension?

we had the timing belt and other belts and pump all sorted out about 9 months ago...so it "should" be ok. Its an auto...theres no engine light for a fault...its the first issue we have had with it. Where would one start to find a fault like this besides on a forum like this....maybe its happened to someone else...

IF it was really a Power Steering issue, then you would not just go looking and find it for a once off item.
I have seen this happen before when there has been an issue with the actual pump BUT re starting the car will not generally fix this.
I would say there is a good chance that the car stalled at this time

yes, I agree on the stall issue. Some weeks ago we had an issue where neither key remote would work....from memory I put key into door and then unlocked it that way....since then alls been good. I dont know if that unlock issue and the stall issue could somehow be related....immob issue maybe??? Any thoughts on how to chk an immob uniit?? Batteries in the keys were replaced months ago...cheers:)
