View Full Version : Mid Resonator for Magna TF 3.0 with cat-back sports exhaust?

Hi guys

I know this topic isn't exactly new but it seems a while since anyone asked, and parts availability may have changed.

For some years, my TF 3.0 Auto has had an aftermarket sports exhaust from free-flow cat to the back.

The rear muffler was replaced recently when the old one died.

Both setups have awful droning as revs approach 2000 rpm, which means almost all cruising. So, every drive starts with a fun roar and then settles into a very annoying constant drone.

The change of rear muffler made no noticeable difference, and the cat is too expensive to replace (?), so I assume a new resonator is the cheapest way to reduce the drone?

I'm not too fussed if it means a slight performance drop: my car isn't exactly pushing the limits anyway, the sports exhaust was more for fun than racing, so to speak.

What's my best option to kill the constant drone as much as possible?

Thanks!

Drone is caused by aftermarket parts. IS a common complaint.

If you get cut and cat back from TJ sports you will And it nice and quiet and performs well

I recognise that original parts are best, but pricing has been a barrier. The sports exhaust was a cheap second-hand buy when my stock exhaust had a hole, and the recent rear muffler also a low-cost fix for a hole in the el-cheapo part.

What's the likely availablity and reasonable cost for a cat-back stock exhaust from a wrecker, especially a TJ Sport?

Only you can answer that one, make a few phone calls.

TJ sedan, new standard cat back system is about $350. Nice burble on acceleration, no drone. I ordered whatever from my local parts place, ended up with a Redback centre section and a Walker rear muffler. Simple bolt on job.

Exhaust parts are like engine oil and disc pads. Wouldn't buy any of them used from a wrecker.

I just got a used TJ standard cat back factory exhaust from wreckers for $225, paid $105 for fitting. Very happy to restore my Magna to its original super-quiet NVH status. Installing a noisy sports exhaust was one of the worst mistakes of my life.
