View Full Version : Shelf mounted 8" free air sub recommendations?

The parcel shelf on my KJ2 has allowance for an 8" sub.

I would like to fit one that works well in free air (infinite baffle) - Can anyone (pea&ham?) recommend or have experience with any subs of this size that will actually work reasonably well even if it's an OEM sub out of another car?

Just a heads up: I'm not in the least bit interested in larger subs or cabinets (I've removed a fairly bulky set up out of mine for space & weight reasons). I understand that there will be compromises with the planned revised set up and I am happy to live with such.

I already have a decent set of 6x9's but would like to augment the bass seperately as they usually just "idle" in my normal set up & I'm running a high pass filter on the fronts. I'm still running a 5 channel amp that can deliver 250wrms to the sub @ 4ohms

Any suggestions, alternatives or recommendations appreciated.

FYI, there is metal covering that subwoofer mount and it is illegal to cut it out.

Just a thought, what about a slim under seat sub!!

There isn't enough room under my seats for that unfortunately. AWD platform plus aircon vents under seats makes it pretty much impossible.

Spetz I know that it is stamped and that a hole would have to be cut. Which state is it supposedly illegal?

I believe in all states

It will be fine to remove the center from the hole, that is how it is done on the other models.
So long as no reinforcement or anchor bolts are removed it'll be fine.
Besides, a magna isn't going to get pulled over and reamed for a 'random' inspection and the chances of anyone who actually knows what they are on about ever seeing it are virtually impossible.
Just do it.

**Bump** Any recommendations (preferably from experience) for a good 8" free air sub? Either from a known brand or even another car manufacturer's OEM sub?
I have read on other forums that image Dynamics ID8 D4s work well but the current model's QTS doesn't seem high enough to warrant such a claim?

I had an 8" au fairlane sub on the shelf sound good, although it wasn't very load but added nice bass. The cut out is actually for a 10" sub, so il be replacing my 8 soon. When I cut the hole I put a rubber around the hole to make it look neat.

Oh ok, wow that's good to know about the cut out size!!
I've heard from one of the local autobarn guys that the sub out of the later model Holden caprices are supposed to be surprisingly good too & I believe they might be Bose units.

I put a Rockford P2D4-8 in my partners BF parcel shelf and is miles better then the standard sub.. They aren't marketed as free-air subs but the Rockford rep I spoke to said they work just fine in parcel shelves and only cost about $130 and are 250rms from memory but handle the 400@2 ohms I've been running it at for 2 years without a problem
