I had been running with the fluid barely showing on the dipstick for months, before the gearbox finally gave up. Then i topped it up with ATFIII fluid because it was all i could get, but that didn't help. After the failure, both the oil and transmission fluid was leaking.

Totally different units sorry
According to the 2nd gen. service manual, that is true for the carburretted 4G54 but the V6 and the efi 4G54 both use the F4A33 box (with minor variations and several revisions). See below:

That is very reassuring, if there is hope, i will attempt to fit it. It is EFI. Hopefully there are only minor differences and the bolts go in at least. I have a complete and running '91 elite for donor parts to the V6 Executive.
Although MadMagna has so much experience, there must be significant differences between the two.

have you got the strip downs of both trannys
internally only some of the friction and drive kits are the same
the diffs are different

the diffs are different
According to the table in my post above (copied from page 00 - 2 - 11 of the manual), the transfer and diff ratios and consequently the final drive ratio are the same for the V6 and 4 cyl efi versions. (Those black arrows = "same")
Presumably the exact model nos. of the boxes are marked on them somewhere. That would allow you to determine from the aforementioned table whether both are for 25 or 27 tooth drive shafts.

A 4 cyl box will NOT bolt upto a V6

I think i've been jumping to conclusions. There is a serious leak in both the transmission and engine, which is likely the cause.
I found at least two holes near the flywheel area

Is this a manual box or auto you are asking about
are you ....trying to make one out of two boxes using internals
that picture looks like a rear engine seal ..the auto oil should be red
if it is the gearbox leaking ..thats not good
the auto repair kit

Well, I decided to tackle it today and now I'm thinking the gearbox is fine. But something is very wrong, because the transmission fluid hoses are full of engine oil (or maybe just brown trans fluid), and the engine had no oil at all.
I took the starter motor off, only to find lots of engine oil. Taking the gearbox out will be very interesting.
With the price of the repair kit, I might as well do a manual conversion, getting all parts from the wreckers. But to clarify, both vehicles have an auto
@magna buff Toyota Camry's are very tough! We had two cars to go to scrap, a Camry and a Ford Falcon, but one of them still had an undeployed airbag. They were both taken to a paddock for a smashup derby, and we gave up on the Camry after the radiator was smashed off, and the clutch died. But the motor never seized. The same cannot be said for the Falcon, which didn't survive long with no radiator.

Thanks for all the info, magna buff. The Haynes workshop manual failed to mention that fourth torque converter bolt :facepalm
