View Full Version : Driveshaft or bearing vibration? Or is transmission issue? Videos

Hi so, I'm having no end of problems with my 98 KF Verada

I get some knocking/harshness/clunking when changing gears, either up or down shift. In the past 9 months I have:

Auto transmission flush (at mitsubishi dealer with mitsubishi fluid)
Replaced front control arm bushes
Had loose wheel bearings tightened up
Had front CVs + driveshafts replaced
tyres replaced and balanced
wheel alignment done

Barely seems to improve. Another issue is that at very low speed, it seems to have a hardtime overcoming a bit of resistance, so sometimes it can be difficult to take off smoothly.

I was going to go put some new tyres on today, as I also get a fair bit of vibration at random speeds/situations. I thought I'd just pop the car up on jack stacks to see the drift shaft action whilst changing between Neutral, Drive and Reverse.

What I found is:

1. Drivers side shaft BARELY turns when in reverse. Passenger side spins relatively freely. Even when I depress the throttle, the driver's side barely turns.

2. Seems to vibrate quite badly in drive, especially at speed.

I am really at a loss to figure out what the hell is going on here. Is this a sign that bearing are completely shot?? Are the brake pads too tight?

Or is this a gearbox problem? Which if so, then I guess it's time to get rid of the car, but I really like these Veradas and I'd rather not get rid of it (but the $2500-$3500 I've been quoted to replace the gearbox just isn't worth it).

I've posted some videos below to try and demonstrate the problems. I've always found this forum particularly helpful so anything you guys can contribute would be greatly appreciated.

Is this a normal amount of vibration in the driveshaft or is something wrong?

:yeahthat: Completely normal behaviour (unless of course you have an LSD). Put any sort of resistance on that passenger wheel and it will stop, and the drivers side will start spinning.

Have you had someone check all the engine/gearbox mounts, could be causing your problems.

Sway bar bushes? Tie rods? Could be a million things.

Running the car in gear on jacks/axle stands does not sound very safe. I think you're better off taking it to a suspension specialist. If they say it's not suspension/wheel related, they might refer you to a transmission shop.

Oh ok understood. I just assumed they would spin mostly evenly. Forgive my ignorance!

I have replaced the front engine mount (the roll stop mount), but I haven't touched any of the others. When I've had the car the looked at (plenty of times when getting all this other stuff replaced), everyone says it all looks fine to them.

Very difficult to see fine cracks in the mounts that are underneath. My last mounts looked perfect from the top but once off the car the cracks were visible. I dont think the roll stops would make much difference to shift quality, its the mounts that count and they can have a big effect.
