I notice what appears to be provision for a light sensor integrated into the KL's dash, centralised between the demist vents... Anyone know what its supposed to be for?

I've wondered the same thing ....

Isn't that where one of the sensors for the climate control is?

AFAIK it is for a sunlight sensor to tell the climate control to speed up the fan when the sun is shining and slow it down at night.

Well thats unexpected. Hmm, speeding up the fan when the car is bathed in hot sunlight kinda makes sense, but I would have thought using cabin temp would be ideal.

Seems a very sophisticated thing to have in these cars when automatic driving lights would have been more useful.

In the Jdm cars this sensor and the humidity sensor built into one of the rear speaker grills did give you automatic headlights. However, Aussie cars got a lesser climate system and no humidity sensor or auto lights. I had to buy an aftermarket light sensor for my car back in the day.

There are after market kits for automatic lights. I was wondering about the wiring for the headlights and parkers and how to identify the wires. Maybe there is something still in the wiring looms for this purpose? Where can i get a wiring diagram for a TL/KL?

Cabin temp can't account for the extra heat you feel from direct sunlight.

You can get aftermarket kits to control the lights. Most of them are combined auto lights/wipers. Wiring it in is not that hard with the factory workshop wiring diagrams. The unit I got has 2 relays built in for the wipers, just run 2 wires to tap in at the wiper stalk. The lights only have one relay so need you to use a pair of relays to switch the headlights and parkers seperatley. You may be able to use the inbuilt relay with a diode to seperate the headlamps from the parker circuit (stopping the headlamps coming on when you just want the parkers on).

Or just turn them on when it gets dark :)
