View Full Version : Replacing stock stereo (radio/CD) with later model?

Does anyone know if there are later Mitsubishi stereos (any model) that would fit a TJ?

It might seem an odd request, but my CD player is unusable (full of dust from farm life, I suspect, like the rest of the car!) and I'd like to fit a replacement but would prefer to keep to a stock unit. THEN I got to thinking that maybe I could get a much later unit that has MP3 capability too.

If anyone could shed some light on this I'd be grateful.

If your CD player is prone to getting fubar'ed by environmental conditions (aka dust) go for a mechless unit, ie one that plays MP3s off USB, but has no CD player.

Cheap. Works well. No more fumbling for CDs while on the move.

Check JB HiFi.

Come to think about it, not too many TJs around with the original & working CD player. 10 years is about all you get out of one.

a mechless unit is what i would recommend to.

greab one with rear usb or sd card options for the ultimate in not having to worry so much about dusty enviroment.

that being said there is always a away to wirefactory things up if your keen enough.. but is it worth the effort if your going to have to do it again in a year or so because of the dust and dirt particles?

posting this in the car audio section might net you a few more replys also

Just got a TJ, stock unit runs perfect although probably didnt get a lot of use... Ive only been putting 1 cd in at a time though, just in case lol

I picked up a Sony USB unit from JB for $30 for my GFs car... think theyre a bit cheaper than CD/DvD ones...

Thanks for the helpful advice...and I overlooked there being a Car Audio section so thanks for that too! I have a particular loathing for modern stereos with flashing lights and full-on displays - any advice on aftermarket brands that might be less overwhelming? (My nearest car audio store is a hundred kays away, so I can't just nip down for a look...)

Cheers again!

doesnt hurt to look online at whats available... if you see one you like its generally pretty easy to find a youtube review someone has done that show the unit working

My current Pioneer has a display that can be turned off -you wouldn't know it was on except for the music.

Current model:

Mine's an MVH-X155UI, model before that.

My stock unit carked it a couple of years ago, started responding to front panel controls intermittently (responded to up volume, not down, and no buttons working... had to pull the fuse to shut it up!). I fitted a Kenwood unit that has a reasonably sober front panel that isn't much flashier than the original deck, includes an aux input for the MP3 player and also (importantly for me) includes the antenna up/down wire and volume mute for connection to my wired-in hands free phone unit (and was about the only unit I could find that did). Pretty sure I still have the original unit somewhere if anybody is interested in attempting to resurrect it, free to a good home ;)

Velociraptor...Go to Ebay and buy yourself one of these:

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Bluetooth-Car-FM-Radio-Transmitter-Handsfree-With-AUX-USB-for-Cell-Phone-Tide-/181493201089?pt=AU_Electronics_Portable_Audio_Acce ssories&hash=item2a41d678c1

That's what I've done with both my TJ Solaras. One of the TJ's has the Verada cassette/cd unit with the four stacker CD and the other just the radio/cd player. I contemplated ripping both out and buying new-beaut doubledin units with all the mod-cons until a mate recommended one of the units in the link.

They are great and bloody cheap! Just plug one into your cigarette lighter, fill a USB stick or SD card with your favourite music and plug it in, tune the car FM radio to the unit's output and you never have to worry about the cd player again PLUS you have bluetooth for your phone so you can answer the phone and also stream music from your phone to the car radio. I've now had a unit in both my cars for a couple of weeks. They are just brilliant!

So you just plug your phone into it, it chrges phone and you can answer phone through the stereo? Is it gd for the phone? My GF always calls and the speaker phone is garbage...

Lol just occurred to me from reading your post that ive also got the radio cassette player... sooooooo oldschool i dont really ever think about the tapedeck or register that its even there!

No need to plug in your phone...the unit has bluetooth so you just link it that way. What I did was get one of those cigarette lighter adapters that gives you three outlets and a USB connector. That means I can charge my phone, use my navigator and have the FM transmitter plugged in at the same time. I bought one of these:

Hey now Stroppy, that's a clever looking bit of kit, and a much cheaper solution that I can live with. Though I did just remember today that I have a Belkin Tunecast tucked away and haven't been using, so it looks like I'll make do with that + my smartphone for now. But I like the idea of having handsfree talk via the bluetooth transmitter, that'd be the go :)
