Hey guys

Looking at slapping on some King's super lows on the front and just lows on the rears but am unsure what to do regarding the shocks.

Looking around it seems KYB is far better than Ultima, is $460 for a full set of KYB's delivered a fair price?

If I were to install it myself with the help of some mates would a wheel alignment or something be needed after?

Cheers!

Don't use superlows..... boge/sachs shocks are better

I have rear king lows with KYB shocks in my for sale thread if you're interested http://www.aussiemagna.com/forums/showthread.php?t=103195&page=1

Use Dobinsons or Lovells lows instead. I've had Kings superlows fronts & lows rear fitted previously and they were crap! Affected suspension geometry which made it nose heavy and pretty dead dynamically, scraped kerbs going in & out of steep driveways & often hit the bump stops once they were worn in.

I kept the KYB shocks and changed over to Dobinsons lows - No comparison. Yes my AWD verada sits taller (30mm lower over stock), but have resovled all prior issues & great handling to boot. Firm ride as they are stiffer than Kings but not rough.

Thanks, any idea where I can find the springs? Can't seem to find any on ebay or gumtree...

Forum sponsor Mits-fix sell Dobinson springs.

I've got them in my 380 and am quite happy with them.

Dobinsons contact: http://store.dobinsonsprings.com/contacts/
Lovells contact: http://www.lovellsauto.com.au/enquiry.php

Very similar springs in that both are very good quality wise. Apparently the Lovells sit a fraction lower than the Dobinsons (around 35mm over stock magna) and are slightly stiffer.

I know with Dobinsons you can order direct from them and a set of Lows front & rear to suit your car will set you back about $400 plus delivery.

I'm not sure if you can order direct from Lovells or not.

I would be also trying Bursons automotive or Global auto spares. They could probably do you a package deal on the Dobinsons/Lovells springs Boge/Sachs shocks which would save you a bit of money.

As for fitting, any tyre or suspension shop (or good mechanic familiar with magna suspensions) will be fine & expect around $250 - $300 for fitting, adjustment & wheel alignment.

Like was said by myself & others here, get the lows (30-35mm lowered from stock magna ride height) as superlows (60mm) are really for show and are not practical as you'd be riding on your bump stops.

Also keep in mind that all aftermarket springs are set for use in FWDs which are 120-150kgs lighter than AWDs of the same vintage. As a result, an AWD will naturally sit around 10-15mm lower than a similar vintage FWD on the same type of aftermarket springs (assuming equivalent diameter tyres).

Cheers, I have a KJ rada so FWD :)

Ended up getting the KYB shocks as I got a cheap deal on them and the Dobson's spring, hoping all goes well installing them ;) Will post on update on how I think they feel once it is all done.

15mm drop is a bit of a stretch. AWDs fitted with Dobinsons/Lovells, try 5mm lower over FWD given that they are stiffer than the stock/King springs. This has been my experience anyway.

Great to hear bud!! Give the set up a few hundred kms to settle in first & then get the wheel alignment done. Look forward to hearing your opinion.

Will do!

Really reckon letting them settle in for that long/at all?

umm... Yes. 200ks is nothing mate. Quite a few suspension places usually prefer their customers to do 500kms to allow for settling in prior to realignment.

Thanks for the tip, regarding the torque on the bolt, manual says 110Nm, best I keep it bang on that or just do it as tight as possible?

Hell no!! Only tighten to manufacturer's specification!! Overtightening will result in the thread being over stretched and therefore weakened. If you don't have a torque wrench, see if you can borrow one. If you are concerned about bolt coming loose, then clean up the threads & use some loctite thread locker prior to refitting.

I just went to my local suspension shop....which as I suspected was a total waste of time.

I have a awd magna and simply wanted lowered springs and new shocks. apparently nobody makes them for the AWD magna. which I know is total BS

can anybody shed some light on what brand and more specifically model numbers so I can simply source them myself.

regards

Jump on the Kings and Dobinsons websites. They have downloadable catalogues with part numbers.

If you are sourcing them yourself - Fleabay for Kings, Mits-fix for Dobinsons.

No after-market manufacturer makes springs specifically for the AWD, however the AWD spring configuration is identical to the FWD sedan so that's what you've got to ask for.

Because of the extra weight in the AWDs and the fact that the springs are designed for the lighter FWDs, you need to allow for the fact that the AWD will ride 10-15mm lower than an FWD on the same aftermarket springs.
