with 3 tyres and the spare not being legal on the recently aqquired magna and semi decent tyres being around 100-150 mark i considered if it might be worth just spending the cash on some alloys with legal tyres on just to get me thru rego.

i wanted to replace the wheels at some point as they are only black steelies on that look like crap anyways. so this seemed a good option

i spoke to a couple wreckers friday and just got the email back from the most local one.... for a set of 4 standard 16" mitsubishi alloys to suit the car im looking at 500.00

500 ??? 5 frigging hundred.???

surly this cannot be right, hoping to hear back from people on what they have paid or know the worth on something like this

to me it just sounded dear as hell... for somthing from a wrecker

You are looking for a very popular item. Everyone wants a set of alloys with near new tyres for a few hundred dollars. Figure on $50 per alloy, plus $50 for a half dead tyre on it, and you have $400. So $500 seems reasonable, provided the tyres are good and the alloys undamaged.

There are places that deal in second hand tyres, if you don't want to spend $500 on a new set of tyres or the wrecker option, shop around.

(I bought a set of 16 inch TJ alloys for $100, another $500 to put decent tyres on them, as a comparison.)

If you go the wrecker option, make sure the wheelnuts are part of the deal. They are not cheap.

Alloys + decent tyres are usually the first to go when a new wreck comes into a yard, then front/rear bumpers, guards, lights, interior bits. Too many people on the scrounge in the yards to really make it worth while for some bits. lol

Actually, look at the wreckers for steel wheel covers. Much more robust than the plastic supercheap ones. TJ ones look ok. Most wreckers also have racks of tyres, you may be able to find some matching ones if you look.

Those are TL ones I think, but the TJ ones are similar. Both look ok, more robust is their main claim to fame.

I bought my TL with non matching hubcaps on the two sides, took me ages to notice. lol

do some research before you buy.

Your car is 5 stud, 5x114.3
Not sure on the offset but if you have a bit of a search you'll find it.
Once you have that you'll be able to expand your search a bit.

Eg, there are many cars that are 5x114.3 stud.
Ford, Nissan, Toyota.

I have 16" FG Falcon rims and tyres on my car, bought them off a bloke on a facebook site for $300 with good rubber.

Are you in Vic, Melb? Ive got a cheap set of steelies with RW tyres, all 80-90% tread plus. If you just need them for a RWC, you can have em for $160.. just gotta swap for your non RW steelies cos my old TS needs wheels to go to the wreckers soon....

Pity you don't live down here in Melbourne. There's a metal recycling place near me that gets cars in all sorts of condition. Late last year I spied a TH sedan with nice alloys and almost new tyres (cheap Diamondbacks). I rang a mate of mine who wanted to put mags on his TJ. With a little bit of haggling he got the whole set, including the bolts, for $200. The only condition was that he give the wrecker his steel wheels to put on the TH so they could move it around the yard.

As to secondhand alloys...be very careful. It's very hard to tell if an alloy wheel has hairline cracks or is very out of round until you try and balance the bloody things. If you do find a set you want to buy then go over them with a fine tooth comb.

P.S. Although there will be some who disagree with me here, the Chinese are now making half-decent tyres. You can get a set of "Bluestreak" tyres for about ninety bucks a pop. The other brands worth looking at are Sailun (which are probably the best non-brand tyre out of China) and Barum.

poostreak tyres,
Coz thats what will be in your pants when you try an emergency stop in the wet...
Havent heard much about the Sailun, but i know the Barums are usually a hard compound.
Most of the cheap tyres are a hard compound, they wear great, very long life, but thats a trade off on shitty grip factor, especially in the wet.
