View Full Version : KH Verada Tiptronic Conversion

So, I'm wanting to put a tiptronic shifter into my KH Verada and I'm just wanting clarification on what parts I would need, how difficult it's going to be and how I go about actually doing it.
I've searched the forums, as so far it seems like I need the ECU and BEM from a TH Magna Sports, or a TJ/KJ 4sp model with TCL, along with the shifter itself.
As for installing it, the ECU and BEM are both a straight swap, plug and play, no?
There is an unused plug in the transmission tunnel, just forward of the shifter, under the transmission tunnel/cup holder trim piece, which I'm assuming is there for the triptronic in the TH sports, and would therefore be already wired into the ECU. I'f I'm correct, which I'm probably not, the shifter would plug straight into that???
Is that it as far as wiring it in goes, or have I got this all wrong and will therefore need to manually wire the new shifter into the ECU?
I'm not crazy about having to change over the ignition barrel and door/boot locks, so if I could do the conversion and have the ECU reflashed with the immobilizer code from my old ECU (preferable), or disabled altogether that should save me from having to change over the ignition barrel and locks, correct? If I do need to change all the locks and ignition barrel over, is this overly hard to do?
Any help here would be greatly appreciated, really just looking for advice from people who know what they're doing and wanting to know if this is a doable mod for someone who's not overly electrically inclined. Anyone local to/around Melb who could help out, I'm happy to pay to get this done if the price is reasonable...

This should help.
In Addition;
No the plug forward of the shifter is for Aux phone input to the audio.
There is no wiring for the tiptronic. It isn't a plug and plug thing.
You will need to add wiring for the tiptronic shifter once you have changed to ECU.
Yes you can reflash your ECU to disable the immob code. I prefer to have it working and changed the locks.
I found that much easier.

I've got a TJ with non-tippy shift and a TL with tippy.
Yes, tippy is fun initially, but after a while the novelty of it wears off, you start to wonder if it places extra strain on the gearbox, and use it less and less.
Am I tempted to convert the non-tippy TJ to tippy? Nope! (As always, go ahead and do your own thing though. lol)

Your 2c should be refunded.

lol
Like I said, in a roundabout way, some people have a strong urge to mod their car, others don't.
I'm more inclined to go buy a car with the features I want. Twin clutch with paddle shift, for instance.

All of our other cars have tiptronic which I use routinely when driving them, and not having it in my car is rather frustrating... Also atm I'm using the standard shifter to limit upshifts and hold lower gears and such, and so for me tiptronic makes sense... So thanks for your opinion but it's not really relevant to my situation.

I'm a lazy sod who just drops it in "D", so tippy is wasted on me. lol
Good luck with the conversion.

Cheers for the help, any idea on where to get the wiring and plugs?
Also, any pics to help with the wiring? Would make life much easier :)
I'm thinking I'll change over the ignition barrel and driver's door lock, that way I can at least get into the car if the remote battery dies.

No I do not have any pics.
As for the wiring, I would go to a wrecker, and look for any car with a tiptronic auto, and cut the small amount of wiring going from the ECU to the shifter mechanism.

Is it just me, because as a south Aussie I would just suggest buying a TJ with tip tronic? These cars are so damn cheap here anyway

Cheers for the advice Mike.
Going to have a look over the next few weeks and see if I can get what I need to do this.
One last thing, would I need to change over the TCL ECU to a TJ/KJ as well, or can I keep the KH one?
And the beeping and the flashing security light only happens when the car first starts and last for a few seconds correct?
Sorry for all the questions, just wanna be 110% sure of what I'm doing before I start messing with the transmission.

Buying a new car seems like a rather expensive way to get what I want, particularly when it would mean changing over my sound system, exhaust system and suspension setup... Would be a lot less trouble to just change the shifter setup on my current car. Besides, my car has only just clicked over to 100,000kms, and I doubt I could find one with equally less kms, though a manual or a 5sp auto would be nice...

Fair enough, I assumed you just had a bog stock TJ :)

there are about 3 cars that I have found with under 100000km, and im not even looking hard. not as rare as you'd think.

No problem for the questions, I am always happy to help.
Yes the TCL computer has to be changed to a KJ/TJ onwards one. The software is different. Otherwise it will just constantly flash the error light.
The security light and beep is only for the first 16 seconds. As I had fitted Automatic headlights to my car, I didn't need the light on warning so I removed the speaker from the ECU. No beep, just a flashing security light.
The reason it flashes is because the BEM needs a signal from the SRS computer. KH cars don't have this wire and it cannot be added as the computer is different. I refuse to screw with the SRS system or wiring. So the security light flashes 16 times.
The wire in the KJ enables the BEM to unlock the doors if the airbags deploy.

That still involves buying a new car, which would mean changing over the sound system, exhaust and suspension. Nowhere near worth it when all I'm after is the shifter...
