Hey peeps! Getting my windows done but not sure of the laws in Victoria...

Just read the Vicroads PDF on window tinting but still not sure...

Can i get darker than 35% on my rear passenger qindows amd the back window?

Im going to do 35% fronts, 30% rear passengers and 20% rear window...

I drive trucks and Sprinter vans so not being able to see through the rear window doesnt matter (to me anyway)...

Just want my two year old son to be kept cool because he has sensitivities to heat and gets eczema and heat rash pretty bad...

Cheers all :)

Yes it is illegal, 35% all round is the darkest legal tint.. You would be hard pressed to find a cop to pin you for it though as it's not super dark so most wouldn't even notice.. Also there are plenty of road worthy places that will pass a car with 20-30% tint

Thanks mate. The thing that was confusing me was that the vicroads pdf said 35% all round darkest but theres heaps of 4wd rolling around with 20 or more on the back windows... saw one today with 0 on the back window??

So anyway, decided to ring them and, yeap "legally" 35 on all windows... in a sedan. 4WD are different because they "dont need to use" those windows while driving... which is true, many 4wd users dont use those windows, thats why theyre a menace lol so yeah sedans, cant legally do it... he said that 4wd fall into the same category as vans...

Anyways, youre right, seen heaps of sedans rolling around with darker than 35 on all windows. My opinion is, if youre not being a wanker, not beimg unsafe (and driving a commodore), you should be OK.

Rant over!

Cheers :)

I think theyre stupid laws. I drive trucks and vans for a living, no vision except for side mirrors, i think ill survive with no vision out the back window in my car, because i USE MY MIRRORS and have blind spot mirrors...

that's it, I drive vans and trucks for a living as well and if you use your mirrors properly shouldn't have a problem.. Some might call me an idiot as I have 5% all round however in the 6 years I've had it done I've never been done for it and never crashed into things or cut off traffic from poor vision

A few years back there was some discussion that VicRoads rules are 35% tint all round except commercial vans. (this is the state law for Vic)
But there was a National/Federal law that allowed back windows to be darker (down to 5%?) on the rear window of any vehicle?

and then as Federal law over-rides any state laws, the rear window can be darker.
Not sure how true/real this was or if it's still the case :S

I recall something similar. Providing you have 2 usable mirrors (wing mirrors in this case) you can black out the back window. Dunno if it ever was the case, would seem it isn't now going by Magna_Lad's phone call with VicRoads

Lol 5%?? Man, I was worried as hell for the last few days cos I went "not legal"... Honestly 35% does nothing for me, sure you get heat and glare reduction too but I like the privacy of darker... anyway, I certainly went nowhere near 5 haha

Thanks for the replies all!

I'd heard the same thing, as long as you have the 2 wing mirrors, rear window is OK to be blocked out. This is something I've always heard "from a friend" though, never tried using it in an actual situation.

My understanding of Queensland tinting laws is that aftermarket tint can't exceed 35% on any window for any passenger vehicle. However, commercial vehicles (i.e. vans) can go as dark as they want (or paint them out) as long as they are behind the driver. I imagine this distinction would apply in other states too.

Also, after doing some digging around, I think what you were told about 4WDs isn't correct. This PDF (https://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/~/media/files/documents/safety-and-road-rules/vsi2web.ashx?la=en) is the definitive guide for tinting in Victoria and makes no reference to exceptions for 4WDs.

Reading that literally, you're not allowed to tint the rear windscreen AT ALL unless it was done from factory.
