I am looking at getting a head unit with a screen as I am getting reversing sensors and a reverse camera (plus install) for my 18th. I was looking at one from the states (http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.view&id=331274371996&alt=web) that was a single din and had a flip up 7" screen with dvd input, ipod input and sat nav. Just wondering if this would be any good or whether it's better to stick to a double din head unit.

I wouldn't call it a good unit, if you want quality output for the speakers I dont see you finding it here, but if it ticks all your other boxes.

That is a lot of money for a no-brand unit. Unless someone has the same and speaks highly of it, I'd give it a miss.
I would check local prices for a brand name double DIN unit.
What have other people put in their cars? Worth looking at the "audio" section.

From the ad:

Screen pokes up 115 mm when extended, will it interfere with the aircon vents?
Seeing it is a touch screen, the hinges would need to be very sturdy. Nothing worse than a wobble when you poke it. (Unlike some other things . . . )

Also:
"OSD Languages - Chinese, Russian, Spanish, German, French"
Hopefully English is in there somewhere too. lol

18th? God I feel old...

The big problem with the pop up screen head units is - well the poor quality motors and plastic gears just plain break or jam, even big brands like Alpine, JVC, Kenwood that had these have pretty much dropped them, the cheap chinese ones will be much the same - if you get a year out of them good luck.

I'd look at a double DIN touch screen model as a better option - at least they are mechanically stable.

I agree with bb61266,

I was put off the slide out head units because I can see it breaking very soon. JB hifi has good deals on JVC and lower end Pioneer double dins atm

Isnt the idea of a single DIN unit with a pop-up screen that its for cars that only have single din space?
So why get one of those when you have a double din space available?

As for the motors breaking, well many brands incorporate motors, for tilting screens and disc loading and whatnot.
They shouldnt fail over the reasonable lifetime of the unit.

Congrats on your upcoming birthday too. Remember to keep eyes on the road, not the screen, when driving! (Heh)

"that is a lot of money" seriously

While I would not be interested in buying a no name brand unit I can say one thing and it is probably made in the same factory as a lot of name units. $250 bucks, with camera etc is not a lot of money at all, will you get any quality, most likely not, will it work, most likely yes, will it have AU maps that are current, most likely not

Do yourself a favour, check out JB

I'm tossing up between two from JB's factory scoop.

For what you get, and for how long you get to use it, yes, seriously, it is too much money.

Make sure you buy Australian stock with a warranty. A real PITA if you buy from overseas and things go wrong or dont work... return postage costs, months of waiting... poor communication. Not worth it. prob best to buy in your city as well. When i looked at 2 din dvd players, i only considered those in Melbourne (on ebay). You might pay more but at least theyre close by if something goes wrong! And theres more merit to a warranty and some places offer "pick up" with cash back (for not having to post it).

I considered the Pioneer AVH-165 and Sony XAV-65. On ebay between 280-350. Cheapest models but still met the pre-reqs.

Oh, btw. I decided against a dvd player, and picked up a 2din cd/radio Pioneer FH-X755BT at JB for $100, maybe on sale still?

I need one with a screen as I am having a reversing camera and sensors installed for my 18th but $100 is dirt cheap!

Good prices on the JVC and Kenwood. Either should do the trick for your camera.

Yeah, when I saw the Pioneer for $100, I snapped it up and also got my windows tinted with the savings (plus a little more)... with a dvd player, it wouldve been one or the other...

How much was it to tint your windows? What grade tint did you get? I'm considering tinting my windows to make the interior cooler and make the car look sleeker.

i went to "LeTint" in Hoppers Crossing. They had (maybe still have) a sale on and cost me 275 for their "top of the range" at 20%. You could do darker, lighter or any variation for the same cost. They did a good job, only im convinced they scratched my window, but cant prove or disprove either way. I know tint makes existing scratches more visible, but cant say for sure they werent there before... i had two black sun blinds on the window before and didnt see anything and have washed the car numerous times and never noticed and these were deep scratches, like someone was holding a blade and the door/ window at the same time and working on the inside tint... anyways, its on a rear passenger window and in the bottom corner, so only my 3 yr old sits there in his baby seat.. but other than that all good lol tint is fine...

Sweet! Ive enquired if they still have their sale on and how much it would cost to get it done. Im going to tint my windows as well as get my head unit.

Haven't had a chance yet. LeTint didnt reply to my email, might try again tomorrow. Looking for 35% all round for roughly $300 if I can.
