Gents,
The next installment for my manual TM. Was driving along the other day and slowed down in the traffic, tried to change down but I couldn't select any gears. I Was still moving so rolled around the corner and everything was ok so I thought I must have imagined it. This morning I was out again and stopped at the lights. When they went green I couldn't select any gear no matter what I did. The gear shift seems to be moving the selectors normally but there is no power to the wheels. To make matters worse I was in a dangerous position and had to push the car and in the process I have torn my calf muscle. Never had anything like that happen in my life. I haven't then had the opportunity to have a look and see what has gone wrong but in the mean time does anyone have any ideas on what has happened or what to look at first?

Should have added that the clutch pedal appears normal but it is like the clutch is not connecting.

welcome back tools

ok you know its a cable selection type --- these are adjustable

see what the other first genners say

have to read back on your cars history before laying down a comment

wondering if the slave or master is at fault

Interesting, I think you would be grinding gears in the clutch wasn't working

Thanks guys. When my leg heals up a bit I will in the first instance check that that he selectors are in fact working ok. You are right D12 but there is no grinding at all which probably points to some issue between the gear stick and the box.

i read few times - that some times the scroll pins shear on the selector arms 47 -48

time to pop off the cables at the box see what it is selecting

dont know is this view of the manual box of a second gen or a first gen .... but enough to get the idea

All sorted. I was double checking that the selectors were in fact moving when I moved the gear stick and all was well with that. While I was doing it though I noticed a vacuum hose on the Select Control Valve had a split in it. $5 worth of hose and 5 minutes work later and I am back in action! I imagine that the first time I had trouble that there was just a minor tear but there was still enough vacuum for things to work, but this deteriorated further until could no longer select any gears. Thanks for your input guys.

Apparently not. I have the factory manual and it says that if you can't select any gears at all then to first check the operation of the valve and it goes on to describe the procedure. Until now I had no idea that there was any vacuum connection to the gearbox, but then I have only had the car for 25 years!
