Read through some various posts on how to get the auto shifter knob off and got one today from tje wreckers. When I took the stock one off my 2000 TJ, the sports one wasnt compatible. Do i need one off a TJ? TBH, I didnt check the model of the car I got it off... was def Sports, not sure what year. Had the the white and red sports cluster and sports trans etc... did I forget to grab something? Should i jave got the metal shifter rod too?
Cheers all

AFAIK TE (possibly TF) are different to TH onwards. I don't think there are any differences between TH to TW though?
Earlier models had a screw on the front, later had the nut on top.
What type is the knob you have?

Lol damn, all the threads I read only mentioned that the leather ones unscrew from the top, PU's from the front... My TJ stock PU is from the front, but the top end of the shifter rod (where the white push button plastic cable comes out) has no thread on it at all, thats why I was thinking I either forgot a part of it, or needed to change the shifter rod over too, cos if all the leather ones unscrew from the top (like the one I got), none will fit...
Could be that the later models unscrew from the front as you say... Ill go to another wreckers and check, dont wanna look like a "knob" who should have paid that couple extra $ for warranty instead of bein a tight arse haha

So you're saying your TJ shifter has a screw on the front? If that's the case it won't fit. My TJ series 2 was a top screw (nut) shifter, maybe prior to that they were all front screws (except leather).
Easy fix is to get the shifter mechanism from a later model car from the wreckers.

I have a KJ2, and recently bought a shifter from a KL.
I haven't tried fitting it yet, but the KL shifter has a hole in the front (now it is making sense as to what it is) whereas my KJ2 one does not.
I assume this means they are not interchangeable?

Seems not mate... you have the same issue as me, except in reverse...

If it turns out I cannot fit it, you can have the shifter.
It is leather, and unlike the older leather shifters it is somewhat soft to the touch

Thanks mate! Appreciate it. Let me know how you go. Im assuming you were going for the softer leather than your KJ shifter knob? The one I have is probably the same as your KJ, but youre welcome to it as a trade if you like.
Cheers mate
Oh BTW, i had a look to see if the chromed shifter "rods" were interchangeable instead of having to change the whole housing. Stupidly I spent all my time taking a sports model apart and of course, totally diff from a stock auto, shouldve checked a Verada...
Wasnt too hard to get the rod out. Maybe check your auto shifter mech and see if a stock rod with the screw front will fit in?

To be honest I am not going to try and fit it, rather confirm that it fits or doesn't though it seems by this thread that there are at least 2 different fitting methods which don't interchange :(
PM me your name/address and I'll post it off once I've confirmed
