Has anyone fitted a oil filter magnet?

I loot old computer hard drives for the magnets inside. As an amputee I use them to do all sorts of stuff, but I also have a few attached to the outside of my oil filter.

To find out if it has any benefit, you would have to cut your filter open. Maybe compare it to a filter that was run without magnets.

Bob the oil guy (I think that's it) is a website that would be able to answer this.

I fitted a magnetic sump plug to my old 380, does much the same job, picks up a fair proportion of any tiny bits of metal in the oil.
Cheap as on Fleabay.

good question

in the fridge seals are flexible magnetic strips you can cut to length
find some old fridge seals and you can attach as many as you like around the filter

next time the sump is off , use some of the round magnets out of an automatic pan

interesting

Extremely week though and with high speed oil flowing around inside they may not attract much.
Rare earth magnets are the go.
Fellow i know has extended the hydraulic pump life from his harvester to double by using rare earths in the system to stop any fine metal particles circulating. He is rapped after years of changing pumps too early in their lives.
We are contemplating doing the same with two pump failures in the last 12 months at less than 1,000 hours and the last at only 300.
Hydraulic systems are limited to what micron filters you can use so some inevitably gets past them and dramatically shortens shoe life!!!!. Vee

The magnets will be most effective if oil is flowing actively past it. ie the sump plug magnet is probably more effective than slapping magnets on the outside of an oil filter.
Magnets will only pick up ferromagnetic materials, in an engine that would come from wear on the crank or bore. Other materials, like aluminium from piston wear, won't be collected. But that is what the oil filter is for.

It would be interesting to see if the magnetic sump plug picks up anything at subsequent oil changes.

For reference, the 380 magnetic oil drain plugs are a direct fit onto 3rd gens?

Pretty sure they are. The factory 380 plug fits a 3rd gen, so I can't see why one of these 380 magnetic plugs wouldn't also fit. With the added bonus of swapping out the problematic 'short land' 24 mm plug for a 'long land' 14 mm plug.

Could fit the 1st gens also?

I dont have a TN/TP sump plug to check the thread pitch for you

do you have a metric thread - pitch guage ... check your first gen sump plug thread
has to be exact ...M 14 x 1.50 .. if you want to use a 380 magnetic on your car

if the thread and pitch are the same as a 2.6 that would work
you cant afford to strip or cross thread your sump

or stop at a wrecker in NZ if you find one with a third gen or 380 and a 4 cyl sec gen
compare the sump plugs
