So pretty much car is making this belt like sound, it only hits at about 10-50km/h goes away at 80km
everytime i finish a cruise i feel rotors and there hot, and a burning smell is coming off tyres
sometimes when i brake it will go away, can anyone help? i wouldn't like DIY unless it was easy
i can't really afford to take it to a mechanic but i probably will have to.

2002 magna executive
246thou ks
both rear rotors are scratched in a circular motion
btw might seem like a silly question but is my magna a fwd?

please cheap and reliable fixes guys! christmas is coming up.

It's difficult to diagnose from your post, but potentially your brake pads are worn to the extent that they are damaging your rotors.

If it has gone this far you will need to replace both your rotors and brake pads.

But, front rotors are always warm/hot after driving a reasonable distance.

Your Magna is, most probably, a Front Wheel Drive(FWD) version.

Merry Christmas!

Virtually impossible to diagnose from your post, way too many possibilities. If front wheels, could be worn pads, bound calliper, dry slide rods, etc. If rear wheels could be any of the above plus stuck park brake shoes/cable/etc. Brakes are not to be messed with unless you know what you're doing, the most reliable fix (and potentially far the cheapest) is to take it to a Magna mechanic or a reliable brake specialist.

Is it both sides of the car? If so, could be a master cylinder issue. If the piston or seals are excessively worn or damaged it could be holding some residual pressure in the lines. A swollen flex line can also hold pressure after the pedal is released. Usually only on one side though.

As Ensoniq says, if you don't know what you are doing with brakes, don't play around with them.

when i put my foot on the brake it feels soft and i have to get it atleast half way before it stops. and constant schreeching or whining noise at 10-50 kms the scratches are on both rear wheels.

At 246,000 km the heat build up is probably due to slide pins seized, and/or callipers seized due to internal build up of rubber dust. Screeching noise may be the wear indicators on the worn out pads.

Pull all your wheels, and look at the condition of the rotors and pads. Best to do one end at a time, with a week or two in between to get the new pads to settle in.

Scored rotors - replace or get skimmed.

Worn pads - replace, lube guide pins, pull pistons out of callipers and clean out.

Reassemble. Use torque wrench settings from the manual for all bolts.

Flush master cylinder, bleed brakes.

Bed in new pads.

***** If you can't tackle this, get someone with previous experience to do it (cheap), or pay a mechanic (expensive). ****

At that distance and age, the brakes are way overdue for some attention. Forget Xmas, fix the brakes!
That way, you and your car may make it to next Xmas!

I've done this process twice on older, second gen Magnas at 200,000 km and the before and after difference is like night and day. I will do same to my two third gen Magnas when each hits 180,000 km.

Now that you know (or think you know) what it isn't, try to find out what it is. We all are just guessing, seeing we can't inspect your car. But you can.

okay guys here is an update:
every time i turn i hear a spinning sound, everytime im driving there is a quiet squeking sound. i took off my wheel like 2 hours ago and i see that the brake is pretty close to the pad, and when i spin it, it makes a grinding sound and it is pretty hard to spin... is this normal?

/when i reverse i can hear it. i pull up my handbrake and it makes a loud squeak then the noise goes away for a little while but it always comes back.

Not fixed yet?
Take it to a mechanic.

Have you checked the back of the disc? If your caliper slides are sticky or jammed it can wear one pad out before the other.

A grinding usually indicates metal to metal contact.

If you're confident pop your slide pins out and check they are lubed and can move smoothly. If not, as max says, take it to a good mechanic.
