Hi,

i intend to change my timing belt, water pump, hydraulic tensioner and a few other bits and bobs around the same area.

I chose to purchase the kits from amazon to take advantage of a free shipping promotion they currently have. after a fair amount of googling/reading, i decided to stick with the Gates brand of kits.

I came across two sets in particular:

1. TCKWP287 http://www.amazon.com/Gates-TCKWP287-Engine-Timing-Water/dp/B00284NNUA

2. TCKWP287Bhttp://www.amazon.com/Gates-TCKWP287B-Engine-Timing-Water/dp/B004SD1OM8

I couldnt find any details of the second kit on the gates website, but going by the picture (assuming the pictures are of the actual kit), the second kit includes the hydraulic tensioner, a gasket that is shaped for the water pump, both of which the first kit does not have.

Although I assume i need both those extra parts, I didnt get it because Amazon said that particular item could not be shipped to my address, and it also said it did not fit my car (i somehow entered my car as a Diamante to my amazon profile) - even though the part numbers are similar and the common components looks exactly the same (its possible amazon was wrong to say it doesnt fit).

I ended up buying the first kit plus a gates hydraulic tensioner separately.

What i am concerned about is that i appear to be short of the gasket that fits the water pump (the turbo shaped one in the second kit). I cant seem to find this part separately anywhere. Have spent hours looking for it.

I assume the old gasket will be unusable. If so why doesnt the damn first kit come with one as Gates says "kit has everything you need..."? I really don't want to tear everything down only to realise i am short a crucial part.

Question is, where can i source just the water pump gasket itself? I really dont want to fork out another $50-100 bucks buying a full water pump kit just for the gasket. a quick searh on amazon shows that water pump gaskets that fit other cars are like $5-$10 only. Shame i cant find one that fits the 6g74.

2nd and not so important (but my curiosity is killing me) question is. What the heck is the gasket that is common in both kits for? the long gasket that has a 2 bolt and a 3 bolt flange at each end. Is it for an oil pump?

Sorry for my ignorance but i haven't had my head deeper than the spark plugs in this particular engine bay.

Appreciate your help.

Jack

The water pump gasket is for the water pump rear cover and comes with the water pump kits which are usually supplied without a rear cover ie: you fit the old cover to the replacement water pump. Last year when I was looking to buy the gasket separately I found Mitsubishi only supplied it with their replacement water pump which is the rotating assembly minus the rear cover.

The long gasket with the 2 and 3 bolt flange at each end if for where the water pump assembly bolts to the engine block.

If you check with Bursons they may have a listing for separate water pump gaskets. If they are a paper type gasket then you will need a non silicone gasket cement to seal them (I used permatex as the paper gaskets started leaking 6 months after install) so as to help prevent coolant leakage.

The water pump inlet pipe has an O ring seal at each end and the water pump kits usually come with one of the O rings. When I changed the water pump in the TL I bought a second O ring from Mitsubishi and changed both of them whilst I had it apart. Is also worth having some rubber grease/silicone grease available to lubricate the O rings prior to reassembly so as to help prevent damaging the O rings during install as damaged O rings = coolant leakage.

TL;DR

Amazon doesn't do "free shipping" to Australia.

You are better off buying locally, and go for the full kit. Check prices though, Mitsu dealer will be the most expensive. Try forum sponsor Mal.

I've got the full kit here, came from rockauto.com, but it cost me a lot more than the Amazon price.

Is it really necessary to replace the other o-ring on the suction pipe? The kit I got from Mal only has one o-ring, should I get another one for the other end?

I didn't know that the paper gasket would require a sealant. Would loctite 518 be suitable as I have used it together with paper gaskets on a gearbox before and it worked well.

I replaced the rear O ring as it had indications of coolant seepage / staining. If yours isn't leaking then it shouldn't be a problem however is worth having a second O ring available in case the one currently fitted to the water pump is found to have hardened or lost flexibility. If it has then chances are the other one wont be much better (may leak further down the track) and it is fairly easy to remove the pipe as the water pump is already out.
The issue I had with the paper gaskets & silicone sealant is the Mitsubishi coolant started leaking past the gasket(s) about 6 months after the install.
Is best to check the Loctite website to see if the 518 is suitable for use with ethylene glycol engine coolants.

Thanks a bunch Magna Driver you've been very helpful. Can i assume then that the kit i purchased comes with a complete water pump (i.e. incl. rear cover)? I cant seem to find any pictures other than the standard catalog pictures when googling. I'll pop into bursons over the weekend to see if they have the gasket on hand in case i need it.

While i'm working on that area, are there any other things i should be looking at replacing at the same time? My car has 270,000+ kms on it. I believe the timing belt was only changed around the 100,000km mark and i have no idea if anything else was done at the same time (hence why i want a full kit). What about other things like pulleys and other seals/gaskets?

The full kit (Gates TCKWP287B ) does not include the back section of the water pump, nor the crank and cam shaft oil seals if you plan to do those as well.

If you plan to do this yourself, you will need to read, study and understand the relevant manual section and obtain the needed tools. If you leave it to a mechanic, make sure he has done one of these before.

It's not a straightforward job, a lot can go wrong.
