so car stuck in second gear,clutch works but the gear lever doesn't do anything removed the centre console and can't see anything broken or disconnected.the gear lever is hard to move side to side but forward and back is really easy.Am i right in thinking that the cable is broken inside the sheath,the right hand side cable looking down at the shifter and if so is it easy to replace. cheers

Check the gear box connections.? I would disconnect at the gearbox connections and manually move the levers on the box to see if they are all working fine. That way you eliminate it being the box. Then you can put it down to cables and shifter so start looking at that. Cheap and easy to replace selector cables, box will be an expensive job so you want to narrow it down.

On my old TN (similar cable shifter setup) I broke one of the spring-steel clips that holds the gearbox end of the front-back cable sheath in the bracket on the gearbox, and the effect was just as you describe. I'd have a look where the cables attach to the gearbox while an assistant works the gearshift to see what's going on, if it's the clip you'll see the sheath moving instead of the cable end. If so it's an easy fix (I 'fixed' mine with a piece of wire until I could grab a clip from the wreckers).
