When my tyres eventually need replacing I'm looking at putting new rims on my car. I was tossing up between GTVI 17 inch rims and CJ VRX 18 inch rims. I'm trying to go for an OEM style look, which are easier and cheaper to get tyres for?

What do you guys think I should go for? It'd be amazing if someone could photoshop either or the rims onto the pic above!

Thanks in advance!

It depends on your suspension and how much you are willing to forgo ride comfort for looks.

If you keep stock height, no more than 17" for sure.
If you lower the car by a good amount 18" would look good.

Personally I would not go over 17" as it seems like a good balance between looks, handling and ride comfort

Suspension is stock and intend on keeping that way until I can raise the funds to upgrade. I'm thinking that the GTVI rims would be a good option and theyre probably cheaper too. I found a set on ebay for $180 but they have a bit of gutter rash and would need to be shipped from nsw.

Would there be any issues with insurance, changing the rim size from factory spec even though its only 1 inch different?

Get on the Vicroads website and have a look. It's up to a certain % of the tyre placard of the overall rolling diameter

Series 2 VRX wheels look great on a white car, arnt very hard to source either, and I think 17in wheels are generally cheaper than 18in..

Yeah I agree they do look good as. I've worked out now I want 17's but now I have to toss up between vrx rims and gtvi ones. I'm leaning slightly towards gtvi rims but it depends on prices really. I just want the rims without tyres so they can sit there until my tyres need replacing (only done under 4000 km on them) also paid a grand for new tyres a year ago so don't want to spend loads more on tyres just yet.

So Vic roads says the rim size must be "no more than 25mm greater than the widest wheel specifed by the vehicle manufacturer for that model or vehicle series;"

So 17 and 18 inch would be fine.

That's width Tim, your after diameter. Either way, 18's should be fine with a 45 tyre

Ah whoops... just realized that....

"the overall diameter of any replacement rim and tyre must not be:
more than 15mm greater than largest diameter tyre specifed by the vehicle manufacturer for that model or vehicle series;"

I've settled on looking for a set of GTVI rims.

Im wondering what people find so attractive about these rims?, I sold my GTV rims and replaced them with VRX rims....much sportier looking I think

Each to thier own however

I chose them because of multiple factors.

1. I'm looking for 17's for a balance of ride comfort and handling and in my opnion gtvi rims look more oem than cj vrx rims. I also intend on keeping ride height and suspension stock until I can find the money to upgrade.

2. 17 inch rims are generally cheaper than 18's. (Set of 4 gtvi rims $180, set of cj vrx 18's $400)

3. 17 inch rims will be cheaper to buy tyres for when my 16's get replaced. Because I just spent a grand on new tyres I don't wanna fork out a lot for replacement rims and tyres just yet. I do like cj vrx rims too though.

Yeah that's the ebay link i posted with rims and tyres. Might have to see if I can come up with the money for them. Could I use the wheel nuts from my 16 inch stockies? I noticed the rims and tyres dont come with wheel nuts. ($45 extra)

Have pondered on this for some time now and am looking for a set of TJ VRX rims.

I think they really suit a white magna.

All the sets for sale I have seen, either have basically no tread, or have almost brand new tyres but have 235/45/R17, which we know, is illegal for a 7 inch wide rim and will void insurance...

Anyone know where I might be able to find a set?

You'll probably find you will have to suck it up and invest in some new rubber prior to fitting up rims, especially in the price bracket you're looking at.
Many people selling rims often try to get the maximum mileage out of the tyres before offloading them for peanuts, as it makes more financial sense for them.

Sadly, I think you are right. My Verada Xi rims have 95% tread and have only travelled 4500km since I got the car in December 2013 (had to spend $500 on 4 new tyres).
So hopefully I can make some $$$ back selling them after I get the vrx rims. Going to do Dobinsons springs at the same time, then get a wheel alignment.

Get a set of rims needing tyres for the lowest price possible, then focus on finding a buyer for your 16s, then sort out your tyres for the 17s.
You'll likely find selling your old rims will be tougher part of the equation as there isn't a lot of call for 16" rims - let alone Verada XI/TJ LE ones - or strip the wheels and sell the tyres alone, on a site like Gumtree.

timtam3
15-06-2015, 09:41 AM
Probably what I'll end up doing, is taking the tyres off my current rims and just sell the tyres off the XI rims.
There is a set at my local wrecker but they want $330 and the tyres are totally shot.

Which is a reasonable price for set that need rubber. I paid $300 for mine privately, with nuts and a well worn set of 235s attached.

timtam3

Hmm, another wrecker had a set a while back for $180 with relatively decent tyres. Now I regret not grabbing them lol.

Thanks for the input ammerty. Now just need to find a set without tyres and spend $400-500 on new tyres. Then the plan is to sell my current tyres to make $200 ish back.

Drove a 2012 Subaru Impreza AWD yesterday, and decided my car needs suspension mods to be able to not understeer around corners :P

Dobinsons springs and vrx rims are my next mods when I can get my hands on a set.

The gunmetal grey rims look good on your old ralliart Alan!
Must bring back some good memories, need to get another one day!

Tempting to go aftermarket if I cant find TJ VRX rims.
What rims do you reckon would suit the TJ?

Never been a fan of TJ VRX rims.
To me they look generic & yesteryear in their design.
I've always prefered the GTVi's 17" rims which in my opinion, were a good mix of sport & class & well suited the TJ, L & W series.
But hey, that's coming from a guy who has aftermarket 18's on his ride!!

Yeah GTVI rims were my second port of call as per previous posts in this thread.

Might end up getting a set if they turn up on fleabay or at a wreckers soon.

I cant see what al the hype is over gtv or gtvi rims......to me they are very bland and just look like factory alloys.....i got rid ofmy gtv rims and replaced with s2 vrx

They might still be factory rims..... but to the unknown eye they look aftermarket......and look very similar to a few aftermarket rims you can buy today......so not really yesteryear

I don't think anyone's hyped about the GTVi rims, just a few people offering benign opinions.
To my eye atleast, the TJ series VRX rims are not a particularly modern look, even back in 2005 when I first bought into the Mitsubishi brand & was looking for a wheel upgrade for my TJ 2 magna. Each to their own, as long as you are happy with your wheels, that's all that matters.

I wasnt referring to this thread in particular, its just something ive noticed accross the forums and facebook that the gtvi rims are quite highly regarded, I was just giving my opinion that I cant really understand why....lol

And I couldnt agree more that they arnt exactly a modern look, but are representative of what was around/popular during that time period.....alot can change in 10 years

I also couldnt agree more that its each to thier own.....I in particular was just after a cheap replacement for what I had, they are in top nick, and will suit the look that I am after with my restoration, and even suit the next car ill be driving, the red KL

@ timtam3 scroll down past the first photo further down the page & you'll see a series of photos of Mohit's old Verada riding on the fine spoke RJR linears (18x8 in shadow chrome).
http://www.aussiemagna.com/forums/showthread.php?t=39590&page=46&highlight=mohit

I know that you are looking for an OEM look but I just remembered Mohit's old ride. These wheels are pretty stunning on a Verada as they just set off the 3 gen shape beautifully, especially when the suspension has been lowered.
Forum Member Lugo had the exact same wheels on his Verada also.
Unfortunately, they haven't been in the Bob Jane catalogue since 2008, but if you do happen to come across a mint set of these, they might be worth considering.

Back in the day, I actually wanted to get these for my Verada but by then, Bob Jane had sold out & they were no longer available in that size & offset. :-(
The wheels I've got are sort of similar, but not quite as sexy as the linears.
