Howdy all, the ol' VRX threw a check engine light today and made the TCL light stay on. So I probed the port and got code 61, anyone had this before or know where to start looking? ( refers to auto trans communication)

Cheers

There is no code 61 in the factory manual that I can see.

Are you able to describe the intervals at which the TCL light flashes when you have pin 1 earthed on the diagnostic terminal?

For 61 you would be getting six long (1.5 second flashes) and one short flash (0.5 seconds)?

Alternatively, where in SA are you?

Yep, spot on regarding the sequence, I used Madmaxs guide, see below

Mitsubishi DTC’s (Diagnostic Trouble Codes)
11 Oxygen Sensor
12 Air Flow Sensor
13 Intake Air Temperature Sensor
14 Throttle Position Sensor
21 Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor
22 Crank Angle Sensor
23 Top Dead Centre (TDC) Sensor
24 Vehicle Speed Sensor
25 Barometric Air Pressure Sensor
36 Ignition Timing Circuit
41 Fuel Injectors
44 Ignition Circuit
52 Ignition Circuit
53 Ignition Circuit
54 Immobiliser System
61 Automatic Transmission Communication PCM Failure

If the gearbox is acting OK, I'd ignore that one.

Clear the codes, use the car and see what comes back.

Howdy Madmax,

not sure about the OBD2 stuff, but she can be probed like normal as I found a faulty MAF sensor the same way when it threw the check engine light previously, yep code 61 is via the check engine light

lol I read what I typed initially, it didn't make much sense, so I changed it.

Try clearing the code and see if it comes back. Is your gearbox behaving itself?

You could always check the speed sensors on the wheels, just in case the TCL system has detected one sensor is giving wrong readings from road grot on it. They are magnetic so any iron bits off the road stick.

Sometimes the codes can be useful (Lancer misfire, got a code 23, easy fix) and at other times they can point you in the wrong direction.

Confusing to say the least :P

So with our Magnas it's a bit different, there are different codes for different lights flashing. In the case of the engine light flashing giving a reading of 61 it means the following.

"Communication with A/T-ECU system <A/T>"

Range of Check
* For a period of 60 sec or longer immediately after completing startup
* Engine revolutions approximately 50 rpm or faster
Set Conditions
* The signal from the Engine-A/T ECU requesting torque reduction has been continuously input for about 5 sec or longer

Probable cause
* Engine-A/T ECU Fault
* Harness or connector fault

The more likely and more common cause would be the second one.

There is even a reference in the factory manual as to what connectors you would want to check out!

Cheers fellas,

Will need to check it out as I just got back from lunch and while out the check engine and TCL light illuminated, and I am pretty sure I can feel the engine or trans " pulling back" when at steady throttle, any idea which plug to check Neo or a link?

Well the specific connectors it advises on are B-43 & B-110. These are connectors between the AT > AT-ECU and AT-ECU > ECU.

I would say the most likely culprit is on B-43 which is a 22 pin connector (2pin height) connected to the AT-ECU. So could be an input signal that is off that connector. Unless you have rats under your dashboard chewing on wires :|

In terms of AT related wires on B-43 there looks to be an EGR vac solenoid sensor/cruise control. This can be found in section 54C of the factory manual, or on page 21 of 54cp3.pdf (as per factory manual downloadable content).

Cheers mate, will have a look around and see what I can find, no rats , maybe the odd huntsman :ninja:

BTW- when grounding the diagnostic plug to get the fault codes, the "anti skid light" blinks away steadily aswell

If 0.5 second intervals are seen without interruption it means there's no code.

Happy with that then!

Tried to check as many connection on Trans and ECU I could find, all seem fine, still throwing the check engine light and turning the TCL off every time I drive it within a few minutes of starting her up, doesn't seem to affect drivability at all anymore, any ideas where to go from here?

cheers

I think you need to go and get a proper scan mate, 61 is Communication with A/T-ECU system <A/T>
