Deano, are you replacing the tie rod ends or the actual rack ends? The shafts that go between the ends of the rack and the tie rod ends.

Hi Mudfish, I need to replace the actual rack end that screws onto the rack it self, not the tie rod end. I fitted a second hand TL rack to my car late last year and not knowing at the time how the rack ends can wear I just fitted the steering rack to my car ( big job) a month later when I had a pink slip done the guy told me there was wear in the drivers side rack end, I only checked it on Saturday and yes there is wear in the rack end, wished I would have realised it before I fitted the rack as it would have been a much easier job to do with the rack out of the car. I still have my old steering rack and I pulled the rubber boot of yesterday just to see what the rack end looks like and rack end is round no were to fit a tool or spanner to undo it, I thought how in the f**k can you undo that, I assume the TL rack in my car is the same, I have ordered one off ebay, might have to get the mechanic to fit it, looks like too much of a pain to do if you don't have the right tools.

If you're not sure or comfortable with doing it yourself it's probably best to get your spanner man to do it. If you make a mistake and damage something or one of the rack ends come loose the result won't be pretty.
Plus the fact that your mechanic can do a wheel alignment for you once the parts are replaced.

Hey mate,
2 options,
Lots of heat and a small pipe wrench or little heat and tack weld a set of vice grips. Did this last week with a mate. The new rack ends we installed had flattened sides to put a spanner around.
Cheers

Hi Dayno, thanks so much for that reply, did you remove the rack ends while the rack was still in the car? cheers

I removed tie rod end first but left the lock nut in its position after cracking it. Then after installing the new one measured how far the nut was threaded on swapped it over to about the same distance on the new one. Toe was out but it was ok for the drive to get a wheel alignment.

How did you do that Dayno? I just changed my oil and checked out the rack and the crossmember is in the road of getting to the inner rack end to get a pipe wrench on to it. Wished I would have realised the rack end was worn before I installed the rack in the car.

Invest in a lpg blowtorch. I used the weld on a set of multi grips method. You should have room for a small pipe wrench above the rack. Are you looking at if from underneath or from inside the wheel well?

Take wheel off and look from the wheel well. You will find it a touch easier. Well it was on the drivers side.
