Hi guys....Just wondering if someone has an old timing chain tensioner out there...I need to know the diameter of the shaft section that slides into the oil pump.. The reason I ask is I'm planning on making an extended bushing in my oil pump to give the adjuster added support and stop the rattle at start up. The only thing I need to buy is an adjustable reamer and just need the rough size of the shaft so I know which reamer size I need to buy... Thanks everyone :hmm:

Won't stop the rattle. Needs oil pressure behind it to push the piston out.

Later models (TS?) have a ratchet device in the oil pump plunger, which stops the plunger from retracting and keeps the chain under control while the oil pressure builds up.

Also, the rattle may not be the chain itself. The plunger has a spring behind it, but on start up with no oil pressure it may be that the chain is repetitively slamming the plunger back against the pump body. I've put a couple of fibre washers behind the head of the shoe, and got rid of the rattle.

Yep,know that it needs oil pressure to work. The bush I'm making is to correct a worn oil pump hole, that lets oil pressure bleed off at idle and rattles. The bush I'm making is going to extend out of the housing to act the same way as your washers do,except it will offer more support for the tensioner and not wear as bad. Sure,as the chain wears there will be slack at start up but not as much as standard. The pump I'm doing it to is the ratchet type, but once the bore wears the ratchet ain't worth squat as the teeth just jump....

True, that! You could say an old ratchet is pretty rat-shit? lol

Sounds like you know what you are doing. (But that is a given, seeing you have kept a TP on the road much longer than most people.)

As for the plunger diameter, I threw all my Sigma/First gen parts out a long time ago, so not much help from me on that point.

(Still consider putting a fibre washer between the end of your new bushing and the back of the plunger, to deaden any hammering noises that happen. Also worth checking that the oil pressure relief valve and spring are working as they should and not seized open - but you probably already know that.)

Cheers, will do with the fibre washer to stop the hammering at start...I think the kits might have a washer in them?? Yeh...the ratchet is pretty rat shit !:facejump: thanks for the replies mate, worst case I'll just by a tensioner and measure it up...I'll need a non ratchet type anyways once I do the bush anyways, but just hoping I could get the diameter so I can buy a reamer now and save a bit of time with the old girl off the road.

I know where you are going with bushing idea

you can get one for the TP from america $130

Yeh I could fire in a new pump from the USA,but with a TR ratchet style engine isn't there an issue with the balance chain tensioner as well? I kind of thought if you fitted an early pump in one you needed to change the lower balance chain guide as well? Is it true the TR pumps were larger volume than the TP pumps?

I think the TP-TR are the same engine, head different

both pump pressures the same

a full timing chain kit for a TP has everything you need except the two balance shaft cogs and oil pump

cant fit a TR pump to a TP unless you change the timing cover and drill precise holes in the block

yes the TR rachet system wears out the timing cogs and guides quicker..

when you do a balance shaft elimination on a TR 4 cyl you need the TP oil pump

Upgraded my Tp to a Ts oil pump over two years ago and no problems with rattles in the 100k i have done since.
The Ts timing cover is slightly different inside to allow for the ratchet adjusters but bolts straight up to the TP no holes to be drilled at all. Vee
