Recently bought an AWD owned by an elderly couple who sold the car because they were handing in their licenses. I had to travel around 800k's home so I checked the tyres and they looked fine, heaps of tread and the sidewalls had no damage. I took it down to the tyre outlet for a balance and rotation and they called me over to have a look at them. 2 tyres had seperated in the tread area, about 50cm on one and 110cm on the other and that section was bald on the edge of the tyre. Things that look good certainly are not all the time. Lucky they did not blow on me on the way home doing 100kph.

Retreads possibly?
Put something decent on all 4 corners and off you go!
Second hand cars will always have something wrong with them. Tyres not excluded.

Hi Max, no tyres were not that old 3 years, no recaps, who buys them or sells them these days? Tyres were called Federal on all 4. Stuck some falkens on it, seems to ride well.

Tyres could have been over inflated for a substantial amount of time, or the previous owners may not have been so wary of potholes.
I have had 18" Federal Formoza FD2 tyres on my TJ sedan for over 50,000km and have had no issues. They're a decent brand for their price point, there are certainly worse out there.

Unusual for tyres of any brand to go like that in 3 years, probably less on the actual car. But who knows how they were treated?
I was guessing they may have been 20 year old retreads! lol

One major tyre manufacturer has a whole line of tyres with a reputation for doing just that...

Good point ammerty, they could have been over inflated, though when I picked it up they had 28psi average in them. Roads around where they lived outside Byron Bay were a bit rough.
