The kit I got didn't have a keyway, just kept in place by the bolt, so I didn't fit it. Any way, I like the sound of those shafts

Yes, nothing wrong with the balance shaft system.
Only problem I've found is that if the driver (not me) allows the oil level to drop too low, the bearing furthest from the oil pump can seize up - this just happens to be the balance shaft bearing! Shaft seizes in bearing, bearing spins, damaged block, can't be repaired, newer engine needed.
So clean oil, and check level often. lol

Do the guides give trouble? I had an engine with small guide bolts halfway cut through by the chain

Only problem I know of is that the pivoting bolt at the top of the left guide can shear off, but there is a later, stronger bolt available.
Do the damaged bolts look like the damage is deliberate, or caused by something rubbing on it?

The engine sounded ok before it was stripped, small guide I think mounted on the pump if my memory is right, looked to be worn by the chain

use the original cam chain or replace it
ring goes flush to the block
the two balance shafts removed and the small shaft bolts through the pump to the oil pump cog
the chain only runs the oil pump

I bought one off a place in Victoria a few years ago, didn't fit it, didn't like the idea of the oil pump gear not being keywayed, I stayed with the balance shafts
