View Full Version : 3rd Gen Wagon tailgate water leaks

I think maybe 90% of 3rd Gen Wagons have the wood floor in the back damaged by water,
My TJ which I bought a year ago was almost perfect - but the huge QLD Rain storms of the last month have ruined that, so before I replace the floor does anyone know the source of the leaks?
The seals around the rear door seal seem intact so where does all the water come from......

I think the water comes in from the antenna hole.

My wagon's floor is still ok, it has a bit of a high tide stain but not swollen or anything. I have no idea where the water comes in but I have noticed water pooling in the tailgate catch after a heavy rain.

I have the same problem. I think it was MadMagna, a Magna expert, who said its the seals around the side windows, and I think he is correct.
I don't worry about it anymore, but I'm not in a high rainfall area.

alchemysa, would you recommend that anyone who does live in a higher rainfall area and owns one of these wagons should either reseal their rear side windows or lacking that particular skillset, get a windows man/woman to do the job for them? I am considering buying a TE wagon, hence the question.

Even if the timber gets totally ruined its only a couple of cheap bits of particle board that could easily be cut at home. In my case its not worth worrying about.
MadMagna is a member here. His company is Mits-Fix or something like that. I'm pretty sure he has mentioned this problem and has talked about about replacement seals. Search or Google for him and ask for a price. He might chime in here anyway.

Yes that would make sense - I had a Toorak Tractor reverse into the side that the wood is ruined on - bet the window seal was cracked as well - or they removed the antenna to fix the panel - going to take it back to insurance assessor to see if they will fi it.

Yeah, a bingle wouldnt help, but it seems that it was a common factory problem in the wagons anyway, at least in the earlier Gen 3's. Check your spare wheel well. It can get pretty damp and mouldy in there too.. also caused by the leaking windows.

Yes, it is the side window seals....in fact, you couldnt even call them seals.....when I had my old verada wagon resealed it was quite obvious they were never going to stay "sealed" for all that long

Standing water in a wheel well can ruin a tyre.

I assume Madmagna is referring to the side windows in this post because he mentions a seat belt loop.

Section 42 of the manual reveals all. (Thought I'd check, I have assumed up to now these were glued in like the front screen. Wrong!)

Holes in the picture give a good indication where the nuts are. Interior plastic needs removing first, obviously.
As suggested in the other thread, don't use the sikaflex the front screen is glued in with, rather use some non hardening mastic.
Once it is apart, you should be able to see where the water was coming in - look for dirt, water stains.
Check the metal of the body opening for rust. If you find any, this needs fixing before putting it all back together.

Thanks for that - with up to 400mm of rain coming in the next few days - I at least have a hobby for the next few nights, seal the window or bilge pumps...

Well that was one of the easier jobs I've done - had it out - resealed and back together in just over 1/2 and hour. Decided to go with the sikaflex option as I reckon if it ever needs to come out again it will be someone elses problem to unglue it.
No rust or water marks so I did the antenna cover too. Least i know where it wont be leaking from now. Going to do the other window just in case. Now just need to replace the wood.

With now a possible Cyclone! due to hit Qld; tonight's home work was to reseal the window on the drivers side Aka the non-toorak tractor impact side, first note - much harder to "pop" - the seal was probably intact unlike the other side, and that the rubbish sealant tape used to put the windows in was all over the place the bottom rear edge was least 1/2 inch out of a join - looked like a drunk Monday morning hangover near enough is just about somewhere near the car....
Anyway sealed - 1 less leak solved. Preempted?

For a bit of rain I'd happily put up with a few leaks. As my mother says... Its dry as chips here.
