View Full Version : I want to reduce bodyroll -> Swaybar?

Okay I don't want to make my TR Magna a bullet as it isn't. I just want it to be a comfortable ride and it's almost there. The main thing that annoys is me is when I go around corners even at a medium sort of pace I get this dreadful bodyroll and it makes you kinda sick in the gut. You also have to slow right down and it feels like the car at times is not that far away from rolling although obviously it wouldn't at the speeds I take these kinds of corners at. Now what I am looking at is nothing like over the top or anything but I am interested in taking steps to reduce the bodyroll so should I be looking at a whiteline swaybar? Is that all I need to get really for it to be decent? I don't know much about suspension and handling so if someone can steer me in the right direction that would be appreciated. I also need to know what kind of swaybar to get for my car. I wouldn't mind a decent size one and I believe my Magna has no swaybar at all so even "a" swaybar would be good enough let alone a big one but I wanna hear your suggestions. The other thing of course is prices.

A set of firmer after market springs will go a long way to reducing body-roll around corners. If you haven't gone that route yet, try them first before putting in a sway bar. I'm not sure how much a sway bar will help on its own. Of course, if you can afford both then you're laughing.

Assuming your shocks and springs are in good condition a rear sway bar is the first step (~$200). Get the thing aligned properly (up to $80 or more). It made a noticable difference to my TH.

If your shocks/springs are buggered then replace them before doing anything. Change the shocks ($500+) before changing springs ($250+). If you change both do it at the same time as a package.

Also good idea to get new firmer bushes (not rubber) for your existing front bar (assuming you have one) at the same time as you get new firmer ones with the rear bar.

Front bar stock is 20mm for 4cyl and 22mm for V6; there is no rear bar on the TRs. I tend to disagree in fitting new springs to control body roll as that's not their purpose, it is what swaybars are supposed to do. Given that though, if your springs/dampers are worn then they definately need to be replaced first, then followed shortly after by the Whiteline rear bar which should help dramatically.

The car has 207,000kms and I tend to feel quite a few of the bumps in the road these days. I guess it's probably about time to change the springs+shocks but at the same time I don't wanna spend heaps of it cos otherwise I would just get a TE. So I'm caught in 2 different phases at the moment. I guess I'll get a quote for a whiteline swaybar and go from there. So you reckon $200 plus installation fee of how much?

If your shocks are still the original units I'd replace them immediately with anything you can get your hands on. Do the shocks first, get the springs looked at and replace them if need be later.

Try measuring the distance from the centre of each wheel to the top edge of the wheel arch when parked on flat ground and no crap in the car. See how each side matches up. If there are big differences then springs are shagged - sorry sagged.

Once you've done that then go for the bushes, wheel alignment and sway bar.

To cure this get a Whiteline!! rear swaybay, it is without doubt, positively ,1000% the single best mod you can do with immediate large reduction in Body Roll. I fitted one and was amazed at the difference (still stock springs), friggin awsome, if you think I'm overstating this ask anyone who has one FITTED (whiteline) they'll back me up.

The other info on shocks and springs in this thread is a must too, if there had it.
Lowered springs help body roll by lowering centre of gravity.
Sway bar directly opposes body roll.
Put these together and MMMMMMMMMM

Whiteline do 3 different rear sway bars.

Fixed 20mm
Adjustable 20mm
Adjustable 22mm

I went for the fixed 20mm as I don't have a rear bar to start with and the only other suspension mod I am planning is decent shocks. I thought the bigger bar might be too big without changing the front.

What has everyone else got? Especially interested in stock spring setups.

I had a whiteline rear sway bar & front strut-brace fitted to my old ride by RPW and it was a completely different car afterwads and I mean that in a good way!!!
