Hi i am replacing the rear or right hand rocket cover due to persistent oil leaks. I plan to get original parts for my TF.

The guy from mitsibishi spares said the part is redesigned and now cost $270 rather than $95.

Has anyone bought one of these new "redesigned" rocket covers?

Thanks

Seems pricey, have you tried Mal at Mitsfix for a quote?

Mitsu make rockets?

Oh, ROCKER covers! No idea if there is a redesign for these, but Mal will know.

The originals don't leak if it is done properly, not for 100,000 km anyway, then the gaskets go hard and the leaks start. You need to reshape the cover if distorted, and torque the bolts up evenly to 3.5 Nm.

Buy one and find out?

The originals probably warp from the heat of re-entry. lol

$95 still seems extremely rich, let alone charging more than that.

Aslong as you dont warp the seal, id just get a gasket from someone like Bursons or Repco.

The "problem" as I see it was always with the rocker cover itself rather than the gasket, but I'd be fascinated to see what the difference is (softer, stickier material maybe?). If you do blow your dough on a $270 one I'd love to see pics.

Cleaning out the old gaskets in the grooves of the tappet cover can be deadly, first time I did it I nearly sliced my fingers off, deadly sharp.

A mechanic friend mentioned that the top of the engine was designed by the accountants - if they had used a cast rocker cover instead of the cheap and nasty pressed steel there would have been almost no leaks as the gaskets have to compensate for the thin steel cooling/heating faster than the cast block, and you only have to over tighten the cover by a gnat's appendage to bend it - and then it leaks all the time.

Hmm, not sure you can blame the material, I just think Mitsubishi are a bit sh1t at rocker covers. The 1st Gen covers are cast alloy but due to the design are easy to overtighten, causing them to crack. My 1969 Hunter had a pressed steel cover with four Phillips-head screws holding it down, never leaked a drop of oil in 14 years and it was regularly removed to gap the tappets (no hydraulics on those engines). Admittedly, Hillman used a heavier gauge steel than the 6G7x covers... so I guess you can blame the material after all!

The 2.6L 4 cylinder engine has an alloy rocker cover, with 2 bolts with grommets under them.
Over tightening can cause them to crack, and distort the cam cap they bolt into.
Another place where a torque wrench comes in handy.

The V6 would have been better off with alloy rocker covers, for sure.

The guy from Mitsubishi had his hand on it, they have never been $95, well not for many many years anyway.

The rears I think from memory are not available anymore, I have 1 brand new front in stock and there are not many of these left either. Japan has Nil Stock of the rears as well as I got in the last 3 a while back.
