TCL = traction control.
It basically backs off the throttle when you hit it too hard from a standstill and stops the front wheels from spinning.
Also backs off the throttle if you hit a corner too hard and the front wheels start to slip sideways into understeer.
In normal driving, TCL does very little, you would not know if it is on or off.

Some solenoids somewhere that cause this problem apparently. Or it could just be muck on the wheel speed sensors.

Common problem on these cars. Usually its the solenoids, they are on the firewall on the passenger side of the engine compartment, near where the throttle body is. Easy to replace, just need to find the part from the wrecker (and hope the used part is not faulty as well).

I had the same issue with my 2000 Ei TL Wagon is spot on..

Thanks For the detailed reply

Yeah i drive the car pretty sedately

Ive read on another thread about the solenoid on the firewall might hunt one down and change it out see if it fixes the issue.

Has the battery light or park brake/ABS light been flaahing as well?

My battery light was coming on and off with the engine light and park brake light.

Voltage regulator fixed it.

If this happens more when it is a hot day or you have been driving a long time, it is the solenoids. I had this happen to my car.

Get a set from the youngest car you can find.

LOL my TW VRX never came with TCL. No button hole on the instrument cluster surround and no solenoid holes on the firewall.

This probably won't help if its the "TCL" light coming on; my experience has been with the "TCL-Off" light. Running the electrical connection at the solenoids in & out a few times fixed the problem.

So do you mean you had a electrical connection issue? Was it both solenoids?

I'm assuming it was a bad connection; this was many months ago & it hasn't occurred again.

I don't know what you mean by "both solenoids"; from memory there's only one connection.

Would this kind of problem not log a trouble code? Or only when the engine light stays on is there one logged?

I had error code 72 logged.

Ecu Circuit system... Narrows it down haha! This (http://www.aussiemagna.com/forums/archive/index.php/t-73633.html) seems to be relevant...

I have owned a 2001 sports for approx 2 years and the TCL with the engine management light would come on sometimes( heat weather more). Over the last 8 months its coming on more then being off, and the weathers got nothing to do with it.
When I had the timing belt changed at 200000kms I had the mechanic have a look at it and put the computer on it but no faults came up. Where abouts are the sensors on the front wheels and how hard is it to clean them.

Is it the 'TCL Off' light or the 'TCL' light? If its the TCL off light its usually the solenoids. I've replaced these twice in my car (unfortunately second hand units also fail). New ones are about $200 for both from the dealership.

I have found it is important not to ignore this issue too long. I believe its caused by sticky solenoids. On my second set, it would intermittently give the 'TCL off' light, which usually means its stuck closed (ie. TLC not working) which was fine by me. But one day I gave a bit more gas to cross an intersection and the solenoid stuck open (ie. TCL is on all the time), which cut power to the engine and I had to limp home at 10kmh. Bit of a scary situation with no power luckily I had enough momentum to cross the intersection before all the cars arrived. So now I've disconnected the operation of the TCL (the top vaccuum line on the solenoid on the left) and the computer now thinks its there, but it doesn't actually cut in to reduce power. Some people might not like doing this but I think the danger is greater if it cuts in and stays on rather than never come on at all.

No it's the TCL OFF light only followed by the engine management light. When it's not lit the TCL works fine. When you say $200 for the both solinoids, I thought there was only one , where is the other solinoid.

Yep, this is usually solenoids. There are 2 of them next to each other on the passenger firewall.
