Title says it really. Can the TJ automatic transmission be successfully installed in a TL and work properly? I am told that the speedo pickup is different ie one picks up from the abs sensor and the other picks up from the electronic sensor on the box. If that is the case, what modifications must be done?

No, this can not be done as a bolt in
You need to either use the TL ECU, BEM etc or Unlocked TL ECU or use a TF - TJ transmission.

TJ Transmission already fitted but apparently goes into limp mode from time to time. What is a TL transmission going to cost me?

That is because the TJ Transmission is not compatable with the TL TCU, will not be from time to time, will be every time you go over about 20kmh

I am about to buy the TL wagon, I have paid $200 deposit. The seller is having the electronics modified to stop the "limp mode" ie fooling the original TCU into operating the TJ as a TL. I know he drove the car as is from Sydney to Port Macquarie, 400k's but I want a ballpark price for a TL transmission if anybody has any idea. Might be good to have the correct equipment installed.

There is no such thing as "tricking" the ECU, can not be done. He is telling you lies.
The only way you can get around this is to use the ECU from the same series, ie TL box in a TJ use a TL ECU and vise versa.
I have not the patience and the time to explain however is all around the output shaft sensor reading differently between the 2 boxes and the limitations set by Mits in the ECU (or actually TCU) for variance between the input and output shaft sensors

mad magna, what I get from you is forget the TJ box, go out and find a TL auto, install it and all will be well?
You or MITS-FIX had one on ebay which I liked at $550 but it disappeared. Not sold, just withdrawn from sale. That makes things difficult for somebody chasing one.
Oh well, I will keep looking.

If you note the signature under Mal's posts, he has a phone number for his business.
Call it.

thanks for that ammerty. Do you really look like your avatar? I know I do not look mine. And mad magna, it is replies like yours that make me realize just how much I do not know. I am a 72 year old man on a gov't pension so I will start saving up now so I can afford to buy a TL 4 speed auto then get somebody to fit it. I live nowhere near Melbourne so asking you to do it is out of the question. It also seems that the trans and fitting will cost more than the purchase price of the car.

@ graham7773
Seems to me that MadMagna is telling you to get a matching Transmission Control Unit.
Probably (maybe!) cheaper than getting/fitting a TL transmission.

AQUAR, as I said earlier, there is a lot I do not know. Where is the tcu located? Is the job as simple as swap the tcu out, ie pull the TL unit out and install the TJ tcu. Plug and play? My speedo is nuts as well. At about 90kph, speedo shows 140 or thereabouts. I have about 8 wreckers I can get parts from so that's not a problem. These questions I invite anybody with the expertise to answer. I just spent the last 3 weeks flat on my back in Westmead Hospital, the first week unconscious. My gall bladder decided it did not like me any more so it left home leaving me with a severe case of double pneumonia and my right lung is now running at 50% capacity. One more question re the gearbox. How long can I expect to drive it in limp mode before something dramatic happens and I cannot drive it any more?

Graham, ditch the deal if you haven't already locked yourself via a sales contract. Sounds too suss to me. Fitting a TJ box in a TL, to start with. If you check out Carsales you'll see that there are lots of Magnas out there in dealers and in private hands that won't cost you a bomb and probably still have their requisite bits intact. I was at "Melbourne's Cheapest Cars" on the weekend...browsing as I often do when I go past there...and they had an '03 TL LS with alloys and around 220,000 on the Odo for $1750. Even if you had to spend a couple of grand to do it up you'd still be ahead of fiddling about changing transmissions.
My point is that there are other Magnas out there that won't give as much hassle to buy. Best wishes and good luck.

Stroppy, thanks for your suggestions. It is times like these that I think I should have been born in Melbourne however I was not. As far as ditching the deal goes, I bought the animal and paid cash. It was only after getting it home that I slowly became aware of the really bad condition of the car. No air, no climate control, no heat, about 30 kilos of bog around the body, only drives in limp mode. Still finding things that do not work. The guy who sold it to me (a member on here) probably (with good reason) thinks I am the biggest sucker on the planet. Ah well, they say that what goes around comes around and karma is coming back. Anybody got a TL out there they are giving away?

What did you pay for the thing? Graham...perhaps you best look at selling it to a wrecker for parts. You know the old Latin saying, I'm sure, "Caveat emptor". Try to get as much money as you can back for the thing and then go online to Carsales and look for something better. Many car dealers will actually arrange to deliver a car to a person living in the country. I know the dealer I mentioned does. They will also allow an RACV inspection to be done in your absence (at your expense)
