Does anyone know what the rubber holder things are for that sit on top of a wagons rear springs are for?
One of mine is damaged and its not easy for me to get a hold of ones from a wrecker very easily, is it ok to take them out?

I think that is the rear spring pad - yes you need them unless you want the spring bashing into the car body - it's probably worn because the dampers/shocks are also worn out.

+1 for ^^^. They are called spring insulators and most cars have them. Car starts to sound like a Caribean orchestra when they go. Regae is what that's called.

i would enquire new genuine first to get an idea of cost. the youngest spring pad is going to be 10 years old from any wreck. i believe the same part was also on the 2nd gen wagons and they were also sold in the US. I'm seeing $12 USD each but with freight and exchange rates it would not surprise me if these were cheaper locally since the wagon was birthed here AFAIK.
