View Full Version : Circuit that activates when car is unlocked?

Hey Guys,

Looking to pick some of your brains with this one, and see if any of you know of a circuit inside the TL Magna that turns on when you unlock the car, and disengages when you lock it?

Have some lighting I installed on the exterior of the car, and currently have it wired directly to the battery terminals with a switch in the cabin. Looking for something that won't kill my battery if I forget to turn it off haha.

Mucho gracias in advance!

EDIT: I considered wiring into the accessories circuit, but wanted something that I could engage by simply unlocking the car with my remote/etc

Have you looked into adjustable 12v timers? People use them for DIY intercooler sprayers.

I would use a DEI - 611T latching relay and make your own circuit.

I know these car's wiring quite well, and I don't think there is any external wiring sources to the BEM that will do what you want.

Thanks for the ideas guys, I'll have to fiddle around with it and see what I can get working. Worst case I'll hook it into the accessories circuit and it'll still work well for what I want it to do (essentially DRLs)

Had a blonde moment and realized my cars headlights don't switch on/off with unlock, so would look a bit weird having the DRLs switch on with the door unlock. May just go accessories circuit, will be far easier to setup too hah

If you want DRLs, wouldnt you want it on the ignition circuit? So they turn on when you start your motor and turn off when you switch the motor off.

I was going for that "all the lights turn on when you unlock your car" type of look, but realized that would entail a lot of extra work to get the headlights to switch on and to put a light sensor in as well, so they don't switch on when it's light

Hmm.....doesnt the interior light work this way?......turn on when you unlock...but fade out....which you dont want...just a thought though

I wouldn't piggy back off this circuit for a DRL install.

For the OP,

There are and have been many automatic light kits out there, including the one I fitted to my 3rd gen when I had it.

I used a DEI timer relay to activate the approach lighting which is what you want, and you would keep the DRL independent of the headlights as per ADR's.

In my own personal car, it had proximity key, and auto folding mirrors, so I used a pulse timer relay to make light shine down of from the gap in the mirrors (when folded) and the headlights. The timer was adjustable. It also ran the interior lights when the car was unlocked via proximity (as the factory remote locking was not used - it is BEM internal)

In contrast, with a simple 4 pin relay and a diode, you can connect the lock pulse wire to the high beam flash wire (TH onwards only) which will automatically run leaving lights for however long you have them programmed for in the car. The relay and diode would mean the connection is disabled when the car is running.

Just some ideas.

Yes the wires to the door locks if i remember right they go +12-0 one way and 0-12+ the other way so you will need to hook a couple of relays between the chassis and each wire - as each wire goes alternately to 12V each relay will activate, when at 0V the relay wont. So one relay will be lock and one unlock.

Have you done any write ups on any of this? Ive been curious about installing a proximity type of unlocking system.

And when you say he shouldnt piggyback of the interior lights circuit. Cant he just use it to switch a relay and bring the live from elsewhere?

I used the door lock wires to control a latching relay so that the power windows have power whenever the car is unlocked. Lock is pin 16, unlock is pin 11. Been working well for years now on my TJ II, may be different pins on other models.
