View Full Version : Slow Wipers

The wipers on my wife's TE are very slow. I've always had a company car until recently so haven't driven it that much over the years but when we 1st purchased it when 6mths old I drove it a fair bit then as kids were young & we had the car seats in there.
I don't recall the wipers being slow back then but since the kids are back home now they are driving this car a lot until my daughter gets her car. This also has & special wheel attachment for my son so he has to drive this car so I'm trying to fix all these things I'm finding wrong...I didn't worry about it with my wife driving :)
I've done a search on replacing the wiper system with a newer faster system but didn't find anything. But I did read a few threads on blade replacement & wax and/or rainex use so I started to think that maybe the issue was just a blade and/or windscreen issue & we maybe don't need a faster system.
I have just bought a 2003 ute with 240,000 k's on it & its wipers are heaps faster than the TE which has comparable mileage.
So, did they just make wipers slower back then for some reason and, if so, can I replace the system or do I just have a blade/windsceen issue?

Grab a motor out of a TL it is from a UK supplier and is quicker.

Also clay your windscreen to remove surface contaminants and use a washer fluid additive that will lubricate the wiper rubber slightly.

You didn't say if this was a problem in all settings.

I have the next model. (The TF). It has 2 speed wipers plus intermittent. The speeds are good for me. I assume you would have the same.

Generally as some of the motors get old, like us, they slow down. The TL one is the best bet, is a stronger unit and will most likely outlast the car

What do the TL series wiper motors look like. Just so I know I am buying the right one and not one from an older car

Likely if the electric motor works what is 'wrong' with it, if it runs slow, is a contact. A connection is bad and or worn brushes (replace) or the slits between brush contact on the rotor are a bit clogged (clean). Generally it doesn't matter how old it is: If these things are fixed it'll run as well as new. Start with checking all plugs (clean). If correct voltage is delivered check the brushes, rotor and also see if it spins true in the bushes. Once all that's right it should be fine. That's the most economical (DIY) fix. Personally, I'd think about replacement only if the bushes are shot or I cannot source brushes.

I too had not heard of claying before so I am going to do that & also try the repair posted by ts370000 first. If that doesnt work improve it enough I will replace the motor. Thanks for all the replies, best forum ever this one with all the things I have learned.

If you have a series 2 TJ, chances are you already have the updated motor. Have look under the plastic shrouding below the windscreen for the motor, and if it says "made in England" then it is the better one.

Sorry if this is a silly question but by remove shroud do you mean the trim under the wiper arms?
